Amp & Cab Mix n Match Questions

Sign in to disble this ad
I posted an earlier thread about my 4x10 that went off topic but gave me some good suggestions. I wanted to run some thoughts I was having by the community, because you are brilliant people.

My current rig is an SWR 350 red head. I have a Carvin 210T (4 ohm) and a Carvin 410T (8 ohm). My set-up of choice has been the SWR into the 210, but this rig is a bit underpowered for my current gigs.

My earlier question was re: running these speakers parallel from the SWR, and I was advised that this was a bad idea for a number of reasons. I have since read most of the FAQ on amps, and am thinking more clearly on this issue...

GAS got the best of me and I just ordered a STM600. I think this will have sufficient power for all my needs right now, and I love the tone. I think it will mate well with the 210 (w/ plenty of headroom), and might help the anemic 410 come to life. These pairings may be all that I really need, I don't know yet.

I am keeping the SWR for a backup and more hi-fi rig. I was thinking about a setup in case I needed a monster sound, and came up with:

STM600 into the 410, pushing 375 Watts. Line out this to the effects in/SWR power amp, running into the 210, for 350 Watts.

This would give me around 700 Watts balanced between the 2 cabinets, voiced with the GB preamp. If I wanted the SWR tone, I could reverse the line out connection. So, best of both worlds.

I haven't tried this (no GB yet), so I don't know how it would sound, but I am interested in checking it out. My question for you is: is there any reason why I SHOULDN'T try this?

And now I look and see that the GB doesn't have a 1/4" balanced line out...lol

Does the tuner out send a line signal?

Any other ideas?

The tuner out is pre eq, and possibly parallel to the input section. I'd have to look at a schematic. You should be fine using the send of the effects loop.

Personally, I'd try the GB with just the 2X10 or 4X10 and see how that works for you. I'm guessing one or the other will be more than enough.

that's what I am thinking, using the single cabs....eventually I want to move to a UB 410, but that is down the road a bit ($$)...besides, I have read reccomendations to only change one component at a time (head in this instace) and see how it sounds before moving on...

I just had a vision of bass world domination!!! Or, something like that =)
