Amp/Cab paring...A Little Help Please!!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought an Ampeg B2R, and am on the search for the right Cab! I'm upgrading from an Acoustic B200 combo, and want to pair this correctly.

200w @ 8ohm
350w @ 4ohm

I Figured an Ampeg Cab would be the way to go...but also think there are probably 100's of options!

I'm looking for a 4x10 cab, and need all 350w, so it needs to be a 4 ohm cab....right?

I play a wide variety of music, mostly rock and reggae.

Any thoughts?

Why do you need all 350 watts? There will be little volume difference 200 and 350 watts thought the same speaker configuration. Also, if you go with 4ohms then you restrict expansion.

No relation between a cabs watt rating and the watts your head needs. Watts are pretty unhelpful in general. So get an 8 ohm, so you have the option of another if it isn't loud enough. The 4 ohm won't really be any louder.

I think you'll find that most 4x10's are eight ohm. I wouldn't worry too much about the impedance. In practice the difference will be barely noticeable.

Probably the best spec that will help people on Talkbass help you would be how much you are budgeting for the cab.

+ 1

If you want loud, go for 2 x (4 x 10)'s (both 8ohms)

I guess the single 15 on my B200 is the issue, not moving enough air?

Between the drums and my guitarist (peavy 100w tube head, 4x12 peavy cab) I get drowned out!

I bought the ampeg for better sound and for a bit more volume.

Guitarist is the issue.

A 15 is roughly equivalent to a 210 as far as speaker area. As far as moving air there are more factors than that, but area is a big one. Also a good cabinet will almost always beat a combo. Someone one TB once said that combos are all about compromise. That's not say that there's no compromising in cabinets, but less so.

Any suggestions on brand of cabinet? How many watts? I'm looking for more of a low end punch, what I have now is just a bit too brite. I'm going to trade my two combo amps for the cab.

I had one of those Ampeg heads and used (2) 8 ohm Ampeg 115 cabs which was most likey one of the better set-ups for the head. I also used an Ampeg 410HE (8ohms) .. The B2RE is a good head for starters.

Not necessarily - depends on the situation... I couldn't use ANY single 15 in any rock band I've ever played it, as an example...

With a 100 watt (probably tube) head and a 4x12 cab, it's fairly likely that the Mr. Foxen's analysis is correct.
