Amp and cabinet dilemma

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm about to start gigging again after not having done so for a while, and I need to buy a small cabinet for doing so.

Right now at home, I have a Fender Rumble 100 that I use for practicing inside. It works fine for that, but isn't nearly loud enough for gigging. It has a PA connector, but I'm not a huge fan of the Fender amp tone for live playing.
In the garage, I also have a Warwick 10.1 1000w head with Warwick 4x10 and 1x15 cabinets. Obviously more than enough power there for just about anything, but even just the one 4x10 isn't all that portable in my car (it doesnt fit at all ). I have a truck if I really need it, but weather is a concern and I'd have to cover it somehow if there is a chance of rain.

I need something in the middle. I have looked at options like the Fender Rumble 350w combo, and have also tested a Hartke 210XL cabinet with my Warwick head (turned down so I didn't blow it up) and I wasn't really comfortable with the volume of either.

Is there a decent combo for $5-700 that might work well here? Or another option is a 2x10 cab like the SWR GoLight (rated at 500w) that I could just plug my Warwick head into, but then I'd be afraid of blowing the speakers because of the power that amp pushes.

Any input here would be appreciated

The Avatar 210 Neo is a good choice. Seriously though, you do not have to feel intimidated about using a high powered head with a low powered cabinet. Just do not boost anything below 150hz, and listen to the speaker showing signs of distress. It will fart out, start flapping and sound awful if something is going wrong. That's when you turn the volume down or just heavily decrease the low end. It will be alright. And just because the head CAN put out a bunch of wattage, does not mean it WILL. How you play, tone settings on the amp and the bass will determine the wattage that comes out.

I've heard lots of good things about the Avatar cabs. I'm looking into them again right now. Free shipping on black/metal grille models.. that's pretty hard to beat. A friend of mine has one, and I've heard her play through it a few times. It sounded pretty damn good. Maybe I shall order one today..
