I have 3 ampeg bass heads and 6 speaker cabs. 3 2x10 cabs, 2 1x15 cabs and 1 1x18 cab. Each cab is 8 ohms and has a similar size and volume. That way i can mix and match cabs. When I use just one cab a 1x15 is the best choice. 2 cabs 2 of the 2x10 cabs works nice also a 2x10 and a 1x18 work very well together. But the 1x15 cabs don't seem to mix well with the 10s and 18s.
Also a 4x12 and a 1x18 work well together, and back in the 80s I used to add a 1x15 to my Acoustic 1x18 and it worked nicely.
So if you mix cabs the first thing to watch is the ohms load. Most amps cannot go below 4 ohms. This means if you run 2 cabs they both have to be 8 ohm cabs. Second running a big cab and a small cab together may not work well. The cabs should be a similar size and volume. Third ... some cabs just won't sound good together and some will sound good. This will be trial and error.

Older basses are not better, they are just older.
