Amp Ceased Functioning/Died - Overheated

Sign in to disble this ad
OK - neighbor's son #3 is kinda dumb to have done this, but he laid his amp on it's back to send the sound 'up' whatever that was for or reason why is unknown to me.

It took this abuse for a few hours I guess when all of a sudden it went mute.

Obviously, out of any warranty considerations NOW!

Question - what is the USUAL component that dies when an amp is denied cool air? I know this is kinda vague and not very well-diagnosed, but I need someplace to start.

Right now it just lights up the power jewel and that's about it. When I hit the pedal, the OD LED comes on, so there's at least the electronic switching happening, but that's about it.

No pot crackle or hum or on/off click - nuthin'.

Oh - it's a Crate PW120 (guitar) combo amp, doesn't have a fan in it that I can see, 60 Watts and has 2-12s + Spring Reverb and a dial-full of effects. Nice amp and I can get it for free if I feel I can fix it.

I know it says it has DSP for the reverb, but I played it once and if you shook the cab, the reverb made a lot of 'spring-noise' like my old Fender D/R of many years ago!

most likely the power amp overheated and one or more of the power devices are shorted...usually when they go, they take other components with them like emitter resistors, biasing diodes and driver transistors...unless you are faiirly well versed in solidstate troubleshooting, it's best left to a technician.

Have you tried opening it up and checking for a blown internal fuse...most amps these days have at least one internal fuse as well as the external mains fuse. If that's blown, try replacing it with a like fuse and see what happens...all it can do is blow again...

If the amp has a line out or headphone out or effects send, see if you get anything from there. If yes, then at least the preamp's working.

he might have been imitating the ampeg johnny smith fountain of sound. of course, the fountain of sound had legs to keep it from overheating

That must be close to the truth. The grill has all sorts of paper confetti still in it.
