So who else decided to bail on a traditional head and are now just running cheap power amps + pre-amp?

My SVT7 took a dump after only 6 months out of the box. I needed a backup and instead of dropping another $700 or more on a backup head, instead I went out and picked up a SansAmp from Tech21. Plugged that into a 850 Watt QSC I had in the studio.

I really dig the tonal possibilities from the SansAmp. The SVT is out for warranty repair and part of me thinks that I may just dig the new setup better.

I still favor pro power amps simply because

1) the majority of modules everybody is using in their micro/mini heads all come from the same place, and the performance still doesn't seem fully mature.

2) I already have fairly light high power pro power amps that perform well under any circumstances that are near sane.

3) None of the micros/minis give me all the preamp features I want.

I'm wanting to go this route for...
#1 HEADROOM - and lots of it
#2 modularabilty - I made that word up, it means versitile (can use ANY cab)
#3 VARIETY - buying a diff PRE is more affordable than buying a whole new head
#4 MY TONE - if my PRE and pedals are on a board, I can take "MY" sound to any venue and plug into any amp/P.A. and have a familier sound in seconds, with just my bass and pedal board. With the advent of lightweight power-amps available at affordable prices, I feel this will be the way I construct my new rig. Funny how G.A.S. works. I'm a third of the way to my ideal setup, I have my bass, next will be poweramp/pedal board, last will be cabinets. ...it's good to have goals

I decided to go pre--->PA power amp mainly for the ability to radically change the sound by trying different pre's, huge wattage per dollar, and ability to run at 2ohms per channel stable.
