It is interesting to note the amp without the wooden box only weighs 22.5lbs. Inside the wood box the amp has its own metal enclosure...Peavey could make this thing even lighter IMHO.
Imagine a 300 watt tube amp that weighs in the mid 20s!
The second pic is a shot of the switching power supply that replaces the typical heavy power transformer. |

I don't know Sunn's history...I wonder what other amp they used that same chassis for since there are additional holes for something.

All of the 4xKT88 amps used the same Chassis, so the other amps were the 1000s, 1200s, and 1500s, some of which featured trem and reverb. Quote:

Nope, it's pretty much all original, I just sort of lucked out. I bought it back in late 2010 off of Craigslist for about $900. The story behind it that I was told was that the seller's friend was a semi-pro from LA who bought it while he was visiting. He'd found it in the back corner of some Portland music shop (I believe he said they had the cabinet as well, though he didn't purchase it), pretty much NOS. The friend then went back to LA, but left the amp with the seller and never contacted him about it, and the seller was moving so up for sale it went. When I bought it, it still had the 2 prong cord and all its original caps, and no one had opened it up since it left the Sunn factory. It even has the original tube compliment (4xTung Sol 6550s, 2xMullard 5AR4s, GE 12AX&) When I'd saved up enough money, I took it to Conrad Sundholm, the creator of Sunn, who still builds and services amps outside of Portland. He brought it up to modern spec, and you can see his signature on the back of the amp. So the only people who have ever worked on this amp are the original Sunn factory workers and Mr. Sundholm himself. Interestingly, Conrad told me when I picked it up it was a bit of an oddity. There's no date sticker on it, and apparently it has a slightly different input stage/preamp, for higher output before distortion. He said it might have been something they were experimenting with at the time (no unusual for Sunn to see odd one-offs), a bit of a prototype that was put out for retail. I can't confirm this, as I'm not up to snuff on electrical circuitry, but I don't doubt the original creator of these amps.
