Amp or head? Hartke 115 and Ampeg PF350
I've had this cab for around five years, and I used to couple it with a hydrive 410 with an LH1000 head. Having no space for my 410 AND my 115, I had to sell one of them before I moved to the bay area, and not being very knowledgeable at the time I sold the 410 instead of the 115.
Never had any problems, but then my LH1000 fell off the cart and hit the sidewalk after a long gig at a sorority....Unfortunately, I had to get a new amp because it wouldn't be cost effective to fix it.
I had to get an amp in a pinch, so I got an ampeg PF350 since it was all I could afford.
I'm noticing that I absolutely cannot get a clean sound from my 115 with enough volume. It always distorts, and though it's a good tool to have----it's not MY sound.
I like the PF350 when I don't have to put the gain all the way up, but I'm finding that my 115 distorts even with the gain very low but master very high.
I use either a P bass with flatwounds or a jazz bass with flat wounds, treble all the way down, bass all the way up, mid either in the mid or 3 quarters of the way up.
What can I do to make the PF350 work at the volume necessary without distortion? Do I have to get another cab? New head? Or replace the 115 with a hydrive 410?
Turn down the bass frequencies on the amp's eq and boost the mids
Or try with flat eq (always a good start), play for some time to adopt, and than use eq, a little at time, to find your guitars natural voice. All this best done in a live mix.
