Amp head into a combo amp speaker?

Sign in to disble this ad
I want to start getting a legit rig together, but since i'm on a budget it will probably be peice by piece. Is it possible to modify my Acoustic b100 amp so i can run a sepparate head through the speaker? I was thinking of purchasing a decent head and running it through the Acoustic 15in speaker until i can afford to purchase a 4x10 cab. Doable? Or should i purchase the cab and run the Acoustic through it till i can afford a head?

Your second option, as most combo speakers cannot handle more than the combos amp is already putting into them. So a more powerful head would likely just burn out the combos 15". You will also get more volume from the 410 with your existing amp than just pumping more power into the single 15"

What if i kept the head at a minimal volume? I'd still like to know if its possible to do modify the combo to work this way, even if its a bad idea.

And i've heard that a 100 watt combo amp wont have enough guts to power its own speaker and a 4x10 cab, is that true? If so could i modify the combo so that it only powers the cab?

It's possible. But you would ruin any resale value. Which is bad, considering you're upgrading. And you'd still have to carry around the weight of the amp in the combo.

don't mess with your combo if you want to keep the resale value

Yeah you could, I did this with my combos. Instead of drilling any holes I simply rerouted my combos speaker wires to reach out the back side, cut the 2 wires and soldered one of these to the amp section end: http://www.mountsandmore.com/asp/sup...FS1026_1197936 and then a male 1/4" speaker plug to the end coming from the combos speaker. (I lengthened this end of the speaker wiring to reach my other amp head, and then just neatly coiled the extra wiring up when using the combo on its own)

So I could just leave them plugged in to still use the combo by its self.
Or plug another amp into the combos speaker.
Or plug the combos amp section into another cab.

Just make sure you always follow the minimum ohm recommendations of whatever amp your using.

You'd also want to provide some sort of strain relief to each end of your combos speaker wires, so an accidental tug wouldn't pull the wires loose from their connections inside.
