Amp hiss - Peavey Mark IV head and 2 cabs ???

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got a '82 Peavey Mark IV head and matching 2-15 cab. I just picked up another matching Peavey 2-15 cab. Here's the problem - the second cab has a very noticeable hiss as compared to the first one. We've discussed on here the unavoidable hiss associated with older SS heads, and as long as I keep the highest EQ slider all the way down, it's not a problem. So, with everything being the same, the first cab sounds good. But, when I switch to the second cab, the hiss shows up. It's actually a higher pitched hiss than the one eliminated with the EQ slider on the first cab. I'm baffled. The hiss is reduced somewhat by EQ, but why is it so much louder and higher than with the first cab? The cabs are the same size and same year. The only difference is the first cab has newer Black Widows in it. I used the same speaker cord, same jack, same bass, same head etc. No changes. The second cab, for some reason, has a higher louder hiss. The hiss is not affected by using one or both cabs. Any ideas?
