It's as simple as going out and trying what's available to you, and buy based on your impression and price. There is no magic answer, it's up to you, really.

Erm, no. Not that simple. A little bit of product and market knowledge goes a very long way. Maybe that is why he is seeking advice.

He's looking for something to practice on at home, so we're talking about small combo amps. Lots of companies make small practice combo's, but in the end, choosing one will depend on 2 things, price, and how it sounds to the player. Anything with a 15" spkr and 100 or so watts will do.

I like the Line 6 Studio 110 for a small, portable practice amp. Another one to look at is the LowDown 150. A little more high end and some more umph with the LowDown 150. You could probably do practice with the LowDown 150.

... but the LowDown 150 sounds less punchy then the studio 110...

You can go cheap and buy an Acoustic B100 or B200 combo from guitar center. They're decently powerful and a combo that should be able to keep up with a bad. Mid quality, low price bracket, super low used price bracket, and GC takes them and gives you a new one if anything goes wrong.

Basically, go to a GC or your town's music store, play a lot of amps, and find out what sounds good. We can help a lot more if you do this first.

A 100W amp is a lot more than a solo practice amp. Unless you have a big basement that's sound insulated from everything else, you won't be running a 100W amp at more than 10-15% of its volume. OTOH, a 100W amp can be used for practice with a couple of other musicians, and it may work for gigs in small venues, so it's more versatile than a lower powered amp. But many 100W amps are bulky enough to be a pain to move around. I like a small footprint in a practice amp.

Practice amps in the 30W to 60W range are plenty for solo practice, and a 10 to 12" speaker would be nice. IMO amps in the 10-15W range don't have enough power for bass. For a practice amp, look for one with CD/MP3 inputs that allow you to connect an exterior music source to practice with. You also want a headphone jack so you can practice without bothering others.

The Ibanez SW35 is one possibility, although it's heavy for its size. It's a 10" speaker with 35W power. It has both a bass input and a pair of RCA jacks for a CD or MP3 player. They sometimes sell for under $100 used.

On that line, Ampeg's BA112 is 75 watts and 1x12, with RCA in's as well as a headphone jack. Pretty amazing tone for a small solid state combo.
