Amp into Cab

Sign in to disble this ad
Amp is rated 975 watts @ 2 ohms, 750 watts @ 4 ohms, 400 watts @ 8 ohms

I have a 2x10 that is rated at 400 watts @ 8 ohms (each speaker is 16 ohms).

I shouldn't have any problems at all running this set up right?

No, it should work fine.

If the speaker sounds like it's hurting, turn it down a bit.

Just about any amp can be run into any cabinet (as long as the proper impedance load is observed).

Just be aware that just because your amp and your cab "match up" in ohms/watts ratings, it does not mean that you can run your amp full blast and expect the cab to survive.

The ratings on cabs are thermal ratings at which the voice coil will melt when fed a continuous signal. The physical limitations (excursion) of the cab are far less, in fact usually around 1/2 the thermal rating.

As stated, listen with your ears, and adjust your EQ/volume when the cab complains.

You should also remember that your cab IS a 2x10 and a cabinet that small won't get you too far.

If it means anything the cab indicates 400 watts RMS with a 800 watt peak.

I wouldn't expect any amp run at full volume to play nice with a cab, but was just wondering with the set up if there was anything special I had to do other than plug in the speaker cable.

I don't think I will ever go above 3 o'clock on the volume dial so should be okay.

Thanks for all the feedback.

the physical position of the volume control has no connection to how much power the amp is putting out. If the input signal is sufficiently high the amp will put out it's maximum power with the volume almost off.

For connections, if the amp and cab have speakons you should use them otherwise use a SPEAKER cable and not an instrument cable with phone plugs.

It's been my experience that if you need to turn the volume past 12:00, you need either another cab, or more watts. Just food for thought

So it is all hooked up and working great. Only problem is gain is about 10:30/11:00 and the master volume is a fraction of a centimeter above zero and the sucker is LOUD already.

So turning up the volume past noon will probably never happen, at least in the house, lest I shake the pictures off the wall in the basement from the 2nd story!!!!
