If you expect a 300 watt tube head to be significantly louder than a 500 watt solid state head you're going to be sadly mistaken. The difference will be in how the bass distorts - it's a bit gentle with tubes.

It's also possible that you're asking too much from the NV610. Sealed cabs have much, much less bass on top than ported cabs.

Farty sound? More like pushing the cab too hard, or possible blown a speaker already. Which is more likely I would think. If it's a new cab, it might have been damaged during shipping. I had that happen to one of my cabs.

The best thing would be to try the cab with other amps and the amp with other cabs. It should be obvious which one is holding you back.

when i say farty, im referring to the tone. just mid heavy, like a farty bass fuzz. im pretty sure the speakers arent damaged.
basically im just wondering if the two are a good pairing? my drummer said we could turn my 610 in a 410 by disconnecting two speakers...would that work?

No. It will only make things worse. Try a vented cab. Sealed cabs don't have high output in the lows.

It would work, but wouldn't fix your problem.

How are you EQing your signal?

What is it you think you would accomplish by unplugging 2 speakers in the cab?

By the way, the theory of underpowering a cab is nonsense.

I used to power my old NV425 with a 500W Aguilar AG500 and had zero issues. Hardly even got to crank it the low end on that pairing was just huge. So you aren't "underpowering" it for sure; something else must be amiss.

rodl2005: http://www.talkbass.com/forum/member.php?u=57815 played his NV610 with a LM-II quite a bit. If he doesn't find your thread here you might send him a pm.

My NV610 has always paired well with several different tube powered amps as low as 60 watt. Even with these smaller amps overdriving I've never considered the tone farty at all. The NV610 doesn't produce super low/subwoofer type bass response but it should give you amazing low mids.

Quite a few NV610 owners (including me) weren't all that initially impressed with this cab while playing it solo and only discovered its true magic while playing with a band. So If you've just been trying this pairing solo I wouldn't be too quick to assume you wont like it in a full band mix. (but on the other hand, an SVT is my favorite NV610 pairing for loud rock bands)
