Amp Repair Gurus ,I need some help

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Trace Elliot GPSM7 130 that the transformer took a crap...Back in the days when I had hair.
I’d like to use the Input section of this amp as a pre amp.
If I understand this right I have to find a power supply to run the front end of the amp (EQ and shape)
So how do I do this? Has anyone else here done this? How much wattage do I need to power the tone circuits and drive a power amp?
Do you need more info then I supplied?

I reckon your best bet is to contact Trace Elliot and see if they can give you the schem and power transformer spec. They might even have a transformer for it.

Somehow, I doubt that the current T/E (otherwise known as Peavey) will have info on the for-real British Trace stuff (I have the same amp, and I've torn the 'net apart looking for info on it). I'd suggest contacting British Audio Service and see if they can help.

I said Trace Elliot, I was picturing Ashdown in my head. Actually, peavey ave been pretty good and supplied me with the transformer spec for the T-Max head, so there is hope, if they have them.

Well, if the transformer has blown, you should make sure nothing else is beyond repar in the amp. The most likely culprit is of course the power amp section. Therefore, for preamp use, the power amp section should be isolated by cutting any copper that goes in that direction (except the ground plane). Then, if you know what the voltages should be for the preamp, get a transformer and test. If the power supply section is gone, it will blow a fuse, or drain so much current that you won't get the power up. If all is OK, power it up and use the direct out.

If the power transformer has blown something in the amp caused that. I haven't looked to see if I have that schematic but you'll have to remove the power amp board and cobble together a supply that will give + and - 12 to 15 volts at about 100mA regulated to feed the pre-amp board. it's not a particularly difficult job.

British Audio Service may be able to help you.

Maybe I should rephrase the blown part....Back in 98 it started to lose volume, guy I took it to said the the transformer was going bad, he removed it , went out of business got my amp back ... no torriadl( how ever the hell you spell that one)thingie
2 weeks ago I bought a GPSM7 200 that needed an input pot, I pulled the power transfomer out along with the power board to see if the pre-amp board was still good, it sounded fine.put that back together put in the new pot.
I had down loaded the schematic about a month ago, but can't seem to find it here at the house.
