amp repair riggery

Last Saturday, whilst playing a house party, some drunk floozie stepped on the cord leading into my amp. This was between sets, so I had no idea until I came back to find the plug bent down at least 45 degrees from straight. I pulled the cable out, not noticing the the tip of the plug had broken off and was still in the jack. Tried to put another cable in and couldn't. Figured I had major damage, but finished the night through the active jack.

Well today I noticed the missing "head" on the cable and tracked it down, inside the jack. Try as I could, I just couldn't get the spring holding it in place to let it go. My solution: a bicycle spoke and some Gorilla Glue. Let it dry, pulled it out of the innermost spring clip, then used a tiny screwdriver to depress the outer clip and viola!

Just thought I'd share my unconventional extraction method and ask y'all about your crazy, but successful fixes...

Hi.

Congrats for the successful extraction.

Usually I'm lazy (and don't want to possibly damage the jack) and just pop the chassis open and go from there.

I do know that the current trend in surgery is to use the available openings, but I prefer the old fashioned way...

Regards
Sam

Yep. I used a bicycle spoke because it's threaded on the end. That way if the glue didn't hold, it was more likely to stay on the spoke, as opposed to adding to more mess stuck inside my amp. Didn't want to crack the seal on my amp, it didn't look like it would just slide out of the shell.

That gorilla glue expands a lot so I just dabbed a little on the tip of the spoke. Perfect amount. It mushroomed up a little and stuck to the adjacent edges of the "head."

Bare hands.

That's what traveling across the country alone for months at a time in a broken down station wagon will do to you.
