Amp shopping in DFW

Sign in to disble this ad
I've played electric bass through a PA for years, but am now looking for an amp and cab (combo or separates) for the first time. I've been to a handful of music stores in the area and each one has a small bass section, but I'm so new to this I'd really like to try XYZ head with ABC cab and compare it to DEF combo amp to make my decision. I hate to imagine picking an amp because I didn't get to play any others rather than deciding on the tone I like.

Sadly it seems like there are just combinations of amps+cabs I won't be able to try out. Anybody know of a "best bet" place for a huge bass amp selection and variety around DFW/North Dallas?

Thanks,
Epolevne.

I would say the place where you'll find the most selection will probably be Guitar Center. The one in Dallas is huge. Arlington's is decent size too. Try looking at different brand's websites, finding dealers in your area, and just map them out and have a blast trying them all out.

Unfortunately GC is pretty weak in this area. I'd find some threads here on TB that speak to your genre of music and find out what the rigs those guys are using. What kind of bass are these example players using relative to the one you own? Factor in how you will be using it if in a band context (do you need to keep up with a drummer) and what size venue. These can help with your starting point for some comparison shopping. I've just started dabbling into bass and have been picking up some great knowlege on these boards.

FWIW, I am a long time guitar player with nice gear and a couple of vintage and boutique tube amps. I have evolved my rig towards modeling. I will, in all likelihood start my bass rig around modeling.

Good luck
