Which amp should I get off CL?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm looking for a small/med combo amp to play rock. Not going to gig, just need to play with drummer & guitarist and let my son learn on. Currently on Craigslist in my town:

Yorkville Bassmaster xm200t (200W)- $400

GK MB 212 (500W) - $500

Eden Nemesis NC115 (250W) - $500

Ampeg BA115-HP (220W) - $250

Hartke HA1400 (140W) - $250

GK Backline 112 (100W) - $300

Line 6 Lowdown 150 (150W) - $300

I'm thinking the Ampeg unless I can talk the guy down on the Yorkville.

What would you do?

I'd probably agree with you and look toward the Ampeg. I've had some good experiences with Line 6 products, but I've not tried the Lowdowns. That's one I would consider if you're looking for effects or modeling, but I think the Ampeg's probably your best option there.

I have a Line 6 LD 150. Got mine used for $250 a couple years ago. It is fantastic. Alot of ppl knock Line 6 stuff, but I love this amp. The tone is outstanding, and it gets LOUD ! Some of the effects are sketchy, but some are veeery nice. The good stuff includes an SVT model, great clean setting, a decent envelope filter and chorus. And the "Deep" button is handy. The bad is I don`t think there is a line out, nor an option of adding an extension. But I wouldn`t take anything for it !

In the $250-300 or less range, I'd probably take the ampeg. Not refined or "studioesque" by any means but strong and effective live, can keep up with beginning guitar player and drummer and play gigs at your small local bar or family get-together or whatever. $400-500 range I'd give a Traynor/Yorkville an honest listen, their 200 and 400 watt 115 combo's sound quite good, a bit above what you'd expect something like that to sound like. Sorry it takes so long to respond to this but my cat insists on typing for me.

Im not tryin to knock ya Pnut (from 311 pnut?...my fav band.)

Point is...as having played both...I'd opt for the GK...
AWESOME bang for buck.
Line 6 (while I love for my guitar recording stuff)..just cant get the "practical" bass tones that seem to be req'd when playin with a real band. (Great when you're alone)

I'm just sayin, GK will be great for "just playing with a band"...and then for the next level...when he decides he wants to keep with it .

YMMV
Carry on.

It all seems overpriced in my opinion. You can get a new GK MB212 for about 50 bux more.

Where can I get the MB 212 for $550? The cheapest price I find on the web is $700.

Yep....and you can negotiate to $650 probably.

$500 not bad, and it can't be too old, as they didn't ship until recently.

I'd go with the G.K. MB 212 (500 watt)...
My simple philosophy with bass amplification is, the more power you have and the more speakers you have for that power to work through, the better off your going to be.

I wouldn't buy any of those. Go to your nearest Guitar Center and buy an Acoustic B200 for $349(or less). Do a search and read the reviews.

I don't think any of these would be bad options at all. There is nothing here that I would not buy for the purpose that you intend to use it for. However, I don't know if those prices are good or not (your research will bear this out), and if these specific units owned by specific individuals are in far, good, poor, etc, condition, and that makes a difference, too. provided the wattage and config can do the job (and it looks like so on ALL of these), I'm looking at price and condition, as the main focus.

I agree that those are priced a little high, but I've noticed that lately on CL.
I sell on CL all the time, and if they are like me, they have built-in some
wiggle room to come down in price. I never post the price that I'm really
willing to take.
I price pedals $10-$15 more than what I would take.
I don't know what I'd do with an amp. $50-$75, maybe?
I'd suggest you look at them and try them out. Condition is ALWAYS worse
than advertised on CL and the pics always miss the knicks and chips.
I've yet to see a "mint" piece of gear that really is.
Good luck.

Don't know if this is the exact same thing, but at $400 new, it's cheaper than going used. Definitely haggle with ALL the prices.

I suggest the GK 212 combo. These little guys are easy to carry, sound great and get plenty loud. I have compared them to the Ampeg combos and they easily kick their butt in volume and headroom.

You say now you aren't gonna gig it, but it's always great to have that option if things change. The GK is great sounding and plenty loud for most situations.

That's just the cab and not the combo.

What did http://www.rmcaudiodirect.com/ quote you on the GK stuff new? I know they used to destroy other retail sales prices.
