amp slaving questions

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi,

I have two heads that are safe down to 4-ohms. I am considering getting two 4-ohm cabs and want to be able to run everything simultaneously.

As I understand it, with my bass plugged into amp #1, I use the "effects send" of amp #1 into the "effects return" of amp #2, with each amp powering each cab.

Will the EQ of the amp #1 affect the tone of both cabs? Will the EQ of the amp #2 be non-operational?

1) almost certainly, and: 2) probably. What you suggest is how it works with most amps.

Use whichever one you like the front end, tone control section of the best as the master, then slave to the other one and simply use the master volume to power the 2nd cab. Effects send from master to effects return on slave is the way to do it.

Send a message via MSN to Hellbastard
get a split unit and use both amps, one clean and one dirty, great combo.

You'll need to test this - some amps, when you plug into the effects send, the signal path is broken and won't continue to the power amp. Basically, it's expecting you to return the signal thru the effects return.

My Walkabouts are like this. I've proved that part of it, but haven't completed the slaving exercise as one of my Walkabouts got cooked and I just took it to the shop last week.

My Plan for the Walkabout Slaving was this:

Effects Send on Master > line level splitter

Splitter Signal #1 > effects return of Master
Splitter Signal #2 > effects return of Slave

I did prove that you can use the power section of a walkabout by plugging into the effects return. We actually used my walkabout recently to power a third stage monitor

I'm having a hard time locating splitters at the moment - I'm not using mine right now it's in storage, can't remember the brand.

But this one would work, though there are some cheaper....

Palmer PGA-03 Y-Box Guitar Signal Splitter

There are some amps out there a little different, I think where the preamp signal isn't broken till you plug into the effects return - if yours works like this you don't need a splitter. Also there are a number of amps that provide a slave out / power amp in capability.

Good Luck.
