Amp upgrade, what to get?

Sign in to disble this ad
So this past year I've been steadily upgrading my gear, got a Lakland 5501, then just recently acquired an avatar 410 so now its my amps turn to go. I've been heavily looking at Carvin amps for the price but now im seeing all these shining reviews for GB Shuttles and they're catching m eye as well. So im looking for an amp thats around $600 or less that compliments my bass's tone, that is to say give a warm tone with some bite to like incubus(part of why I got a lakland and couldn't be happier) or mudvayne(I knw its mostly his warwick but you get the idea tone-wise) for example.

Peavey Tour 450?

I see from your signature that you're using a Peavey Tour 450. Why do you wanna upgrade the amp? What isn't it giving you that you want?

I'm using a Tour 700 with an Avatar 2X12 and I personally don't see a need for me to upgrade anytime soon. I'm getting all of my tonal needs from my setup, which is a nice clean tone, with lots of volume. If I ever need to get more volume, I know I can add a second 2X12 to get 700 watts from my amp, which is way more then I need anyway.

Maybe you need to consider a pedal or two if you wanna add some dirt or grit to your tone.

I'd like a lil more headroom and versatility now that I've got a cab that can handle more watts, and honestly its mostls GAS, lol. Really lookin at the carvin bx1500 that way I can add another 4ohm cab and all that stuff.

ya, first thing to ask is what's wrong with your peavey? however, if you're interested in a shuttle, i can't think of a nicer bunch of guys to buy an amp from. if i ever decide to get another micro, it will more than likely be a shuttle. of course, my wife has me on a buying freeze (though she did let me get one of those $50 b2re's that mf mistakenly posted today...mainly because she thinks it'll kick out and i won't get it...she's probably right).

Yeah, there's nothin wrong with the peavey, I'll probly keep her as a backup once I upgrade, but I love the features of the peavey and thats what has me lookin at carvin. Its got the 9 band eq I already love from the peavey plus more power and versatility and has a preamp tube over the peavey and its cheaper than most amps in its class(as in GB or MB class d hybrids).

Why not look at the Tour 700 if you like what the 450 gives you? I can speak from experience that the Tour 700 gets extremely loud even when only driving it at 8 ohms. Unless you really want to try the Preamp tube, I don't see why you would wanna fix what isn't broken. Get the Tour 700, and have fun with the extra power, in my opinion.

for that price, you'd be hard pressed to beat a Mark Bass LMIII, if you're talking $600 for a new head...

As much as I LOVE the portability of my new Shuttle 6, it has been nuttin' but a headache. I sent it back for repair once already (after 5 gigs), am not getting the sound I was hoping for (that may be the new Neo cabs I'm using, also for the portability. 18 lbs ea., haven't had Neos before), and, because the amp kept shutting down on me at my gigs, I'm now just a bit jumpy waiting for it to happen again (after the repair, so far, so good..) I was using an SWR amp before and I really liked the Aural Enhancer feature.
