Why wouldn't you just run a Sansamp BDDI or similar overdrive pedal in front of your amp?

Other than that, the Fender Bassman 300 Pro has a blendable distortion channel. You can dial in anything from mild tube grind to full on nasty distortion.

I play a Mesa D-180, and it does get nasty.

Some GK amps have an interesting distortion feature as well.

If your bass's output is high enough, cranking the gain on an SVT-CL can get you some interesting tones.

Marshalls and Oranges are practically most known for their dirty sounds.

In My Experience:

D180 is hard to beat for distortion, controls might take some getting used to but worth it. SVT Pro 2 produced lovely distortion when set accordingly. 100 watt Marshalls are fairly awesome, but instead of a distortion setting you just have a volume knob, louder is more distortion. Similar results with old Sound City heads.

Owned 2 Ashdown RPM-1 preamps that had a pretty good distortion sound. Also good luck with Ampeg SVP Pro and SWR Interstellar Overdrive preamps.

Solid state amps I've gotten good distortion out of include Acoustic 320 and ancient Peavey "Bass" head. Both of these reacted along the lines of the Marshall..turn them up high enough, they distort, but it sounds good.

Fender 300/Sunn 300 and Peavey Classic 400 both have blendable , switchable overdrive channels, neither one was pleasing to my ears however. Both reminded me of a sound I could get with a $20 pedal. IMO. Your ears are not mine.
