Amp Wont turn on

Sign in to disble this ad
It was working minutes ago.

I pulled it away from the wall a bit more and it just stopped working.

My power cord dose not unplug from my amp and the fuse is not black, its clear.

Breaker is fine because im charging my psp on it.

Dose the whole amp stop working if the switch light burns out?

What amp? If the "lamp" burns out for the power switch the amp will still work.

The fuse must be removed to check it - they usually don't turn black when they blow. Pull it and check it carefully - sounds like a fuse to me.

A "fixed" power cord if pulled can loose connection inside the amp. Get a tech to look at it. Try a different wall outlet first.

Then YOU should not try! If you have a multimeter use the "Ohms" function to test your fuse, one lead to each side of the fuse.

tested fuse on ohms

2000 ohms not mistaken as 2000K ohms = 00.2
200 ohms = 01.7~01.8

is it working?

Yep the fuse is ok. You could have had a wire open in the cord itself, many possibilities. Get a tech to look at it.

to check the AC cord, with the amp unplugged from the wall, take your meter and touch it to each of the flat lugs (not the round ground one). then flip your power switch to on. it should read as if its shorted. if it reads open, then you either have some disconnected AC wires inside, a blown internal fuse, or a bad power transformer.

Quite a few amps have another fuse or 2 inside. You'd have to take the cover off to see them. Look along the back where the power cord comes in. May be mounted there or one of the circuit boards. Don't know what kind of amp you have but if it's the usual rackmount SS amp you should be able to just remove some screws and take the cover off the top.

Edit: johnk-10's test instructions on the plug should tell you whether or not you need to go inside.

Is that a litte 15watt guitar practice amp? It's weird, punch GF-15 in google and you get chinese wholesale manufacturers that sell them in lots of 100 under a bunch of different names, or with no name so you can put your own on there. None of them were labeled "academy" though.

Anyway, if there are 4 screws on the top of the amp, remove those and check out the back for any more screws that need taking out and the amp part should slide out the back...or maybe the front, who knows. Pay attention to the little speaker wire so it doesn't get ripped loose.

I got my amp opened finally they glue them shut on top of the screws...

there is no internal fuse. and all wires are intact.

This is my horrible pic of the inside

If you think its the transformer could i use a computer powersupply instead of the wall?

Amps are not user serviceable. Don't fool around inside it unless you know what you're doing. That being said, troubleshoot through your chain, from your guitar through your cable, and make sure those are working and that your volume is not turned down. It may not be worth fixing a cheap amp if it's the amp. Call around and see if someone can look at it for low cost.
