Which amp works well with both double bass and electric bass?

Sign in to disble this ad
I am having a think about my amplification at the moment, and am trying to get a modern answer to an old question: what is the best bass amp for use both with double bass and electric bass? Small club venues only, no more that 200 watts. People have mentioned Hartke and SVP Pro to me - are they the best options? Any thoughts appreciated.

Phil Jones Bass (Briefcase / Suitcase), or maybe an older but proven concept the GK MB-150? Very transparent sounding amps to my ears (way more than Hartke & Ampeg).

You might want to review the DB Forum - lots of threads there.

The best I ever had was an Eden CXC-110, but I actually liked the Hartke Kickback 12 a lot- it's *shape* knob dialed my DB's semi-wolf tone out nicely, and was very impressive volume-wise w/BG.

GK is a popular option. Walter Woods, Acoustic Image and Euphonic Audio are really transparent amps that work great for UB. I think it's easier to warm these up for EB with pedals than to clean up a less transparent amp for UB.

I'm using a Euphonic Audio Doubler these days with very good results. I use a VT Bass with the EB to get a more vintage sound out of it.

You want the most "neutral" amp that you can find. I would not recommend Ampeg, as they are very colored.

I currently use my Markbass F1 with decent results on my DB. Although, you should consider that the cabinet is equally important, and further, the impedance matching for your DB is going to matter. I use a Baggs Paracoustic DI in front of the F1.

Just get one of these and a modeler for the electric bass if you want.

Lots of options available these days...
GK, Acoustic Image, Phil Jones, Euphonic Audio, Walter Woods, Genz Benz....

If I were shopping right now- the GK MB 200 would be on my short list to check out.....
