Which amp would be good for me next?

Hey guys, so right now I am looking to upgrade from my Ampeg Ba115, and I need your help to help me pick out an amp so I don't make any decisions I regret. Here's some info that should help.

What style do you play? Hard Rock/Metal

How much are you willing to spend? $1000 or less.

How loud do you need to play/what kind of gigs are you playing? Anywhere from medium sized clubs to a large venue. (venues in warped tour, stuff like that)

What bass are you going to play with this amp? At the moment I'm playing a Schecter Omen Extreme 5 bass, with D'addario flatwounds, but in the future I'm might be playing a Modulus Quantum 5 Quilt 5-String Bass with the same strings on my Schecter.

What kind of amp is your guitarist using? Not sure what amp exactly, but he's using a Marshall.

What tone are you going for? I'm going for a bassy yet middy, low end, growly thick sound.

I'm also a big fan of Ampeg and GK.

All help is appreciated, thank you!

In general, the rule is that your bass amp should be 3-4x louder than the guitar amps in your band. This rule worked well for me when I bought my amp. If you like Ampeg, then definitely stick with it and put together a half stack based on the rule I provided.

For speakers, a 15" should provide that low end that your looking for.

Er, how much speaker is your guitarist playing through?

I used a single 15" for loud metal for years, but my guitarists have mostly been sane, and I haven't pushed much in the way of lows.

$1000 can get you some great loud stuff if you look mainly for used gear. You could probably swing a good GK head and an Ampeg 810 for that much.

$1,000 or less? Looks like used GK will be the way to go. A used 700RB or 1001RB might be the ticket.

That said, if you were willing to spend $1,500 I would HIGHLY suggest a used Mesa M6 or M9 Carbine. Those heads, IME, will best get the sound you're looking for. Hook those up to a 2x12 or 4x10 and you'll be set.

For large venues I don't see a sinlge 15 cutting it for stage volume unless its insanely efficent. Id look for a decent 410 cab atleast. Better to have a little more than not enough. Imo you could find a svt410hlf and an svt7pro for 1000 used in total. I used a svt410hlf with my svtcl the other night at starland ballroom and it did great. But I couldn't imagine a 15 being enough for what your talking about. A single 15 wouldn't have worked for me the other night and your talking about larger or same size venues.

Just heard a guy using a Mesa M9 with a Carvin 410 cab, and it sounded great. A limited budget doesn't mean you can't get a good sounding rig with a little shopping arouind. The GK1001RBII is another good head to consider used.

Ampeg SVT4PRO or SVT7PRO with an SVT-410HLF, 610HLF, or search for a decently priced 810. The heads should be priced in the $450-$600 range used. The cabs from $400 to $650. You may possibly be able to swing an SVT2PRO if you want to go the tube route. That should be found in the $600 to $750 range.

GK 1001RB is another fine head. Pair that with an 810 and you'll be plenty loud and sound good too.
