Ampeg 1540 ideas?

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently picked up an ampeg svt1540 on craigslist. I was stoked on the idea of this cab but I want to use it at it's full potential. What I'm getting at here is the cab has kind of a low power rating/handling. It does 400w at 8 ohms or 200 on the top 4x10 and 200w on the bottom 1x15 at 4 ohms per side. So what I think I would like to do is purchase two hartke 2500 heads. (I get them for about $188 from my work) or replace all five speakers so the cab runs at a 4ohm total load or 8 and 8 if I were to biamp. I was wondering if anyone would like to sway me away frm the two head idea. New speakers or rewiring would be no issue, but two heads seems to be the most interesting idea to me, so it is the most appeling. I only paid 100 for the cab. It needs some retolexing and took to a good cleaning, but Is fully functional and otherwise in really good shape. Anyway, if anyone has some non tube suggestions please respond!

Upgrading the speakers may be the only good thing you can do to that cab.

I had one, it sucked..............

There is a reason it had a very short production life. At least you only paid $100

I'd replace the speakers, the bottom speaker, I'd acquire a Eminence 3015, on the top 4x10's, I'd acquire and install the Legend B810 or maybe the Jensen Mods for a little more high end, with the 32 ohm rating, 4 in parallel, will give you 8 ohms, so with the 8 ohm 15 speaker and the combine the total you should have a 4 ohm load ... the one question I have is ... is the 4x10 chamber divided, like the SVT? 2 speakers, per chamber .... but this is what I would be thinking of doing

i think that the 3015 and four B810's recommendation is the best solution for that cab, and would be far superior to the stock drivers. the only drawback is, it would be a costly upgrade.

I don't think so, I'll pull a speaker out in a bit and check. The 15 is ported. The cab is solid. I've got an 810 I'd just really like to use this cab. I can only take one in my elantra, and I prefer the 15 for my bottom end. Thanks everyone for you quick replies. Hope you all had a good 4th!
