Ampeg 1x15 fliptop cab questions

Sign in to disble this ad
I recently acquired an older Ampeg 1x15 fliptop cabinet which a seller threw in with a '68 drip edge Bassman. It's got some wear, a few red paint drops, and two broken latches. I really have no use for the cab and would like to sell it. I can't find values for these cabs anywhere on the net or in completed listings on eBay. Can anyone offer any type of info/value on it? If it won't be much maybe I can just bolt down the top of the cab and make it a sealed enclosure and play through it? Thanks.

Looks pretty cool. Is it a Jensen? Looks a little taller than your typical fliptop cab.

In that shape, a couple hundy maybe. That doesn't look like one of the original speakers that it came with...which would be a CTS or Altec, and that would also lower the value. It's pretty beat, and while I'm sure it still sounds great, condition is important to current market price.

The Thiele cab B-15's of the 70's were a few inches taller than the 60's cabs, yes.

Thanks, Jimmy! I have no idea what that speaker is. Looks like it's front loaded so I'll pull the grille and speaker to give it a look when I get home.

I'm not looking for a fortune for the cab, just a little cash to offset the cost of the mods I'm getting done to the Bassman.

Whatever you do, don't ruin it by bolting the top down. It's not like there are a lot of these left floating around out there.

If the price is right, btw, I'll take it off your hands. Send me a PM if you'd like.

Thanks, Josh.

Just so it's clear to the mods, I wasn't meaning for this to be a for sale thread.

That's crazy it's front loaded. It should be rear loaded. Whoever installed it made a mistake, as you will find when you try to take the grille off and you find it next to impossible .

I'm 99.9% sure I'm wrong.

Never mind...looks like I'm hallucinating. I thought it was front mounted, but it does look like it's rear mounted after all. Never mind

That looks a bit different from my Thiele cab though, both the baffle and the grill clothe.

You weren't hallucinating, you were just having a Roseanne Rosanadana moment.

You're a supporting member, you're allowed to sell, albeit not in this section...

Uhhh yea, hence that post of mine which you quoted. Just looking for info and value.

I took more photos tonight and will post them tomorrow. Pulling the speaker would be a huge PITA so I won't do that. Can't find any stamps or markings on it, either. I tried my Jazz Bass through the set tonight and it sounds PISSED! Crazy tube growl.

Here are the photos I took last night. Like I said, no idea what the speaker is and I don't feel like pulling it just for photos, either. Sounds pretty good, though! I'm thinking I may just replace all of the latches for $40 from fliptops.net and keep it. Maybe replace the speaker with a higher powered one down the road.

Ya, why not keep it? Best speaker to put in them is an Altec 421a. A little pricey but works very well in that cab.

Thanks, Jim. I think you're right. Will keep an eye out for one of those speakers. The current one sounds OK but it's a tad floppy. Sound's bad ass with guitar, tough!

Here's a little update:

I had my Bassman modded by Mark Norwine here in NJ to have AB165 preamps and an AA865 inverter & power section. It sounds ridiculous with my guitars and equally awesome with my basses.

The amp really likes a 4 ohm speaker and I didn't have a cab for it yet so I picked up a Jensen Neo 15-150 speaker, tossed it in the Ampeg 1x15 cab, threw a 70's Fender logo on it, and it's a beautiful pairing. When I want to play bass I hook it up to either my GL Neo 212MBE cab or my Avatar Neo 4x10 and it THUMPS! I'm extremely happy!

Well, considering the original grill cloth was already replaced w/ a Fender, might as well replace the logo. If you get a chance to find an orphaned B15N head from the 70s, you should still get it.
