Ampeg 2x15 with EVM-15L original?

Sign in to disble this ad
Ampeg 2x15 cabinet, said to be a 70's, has two EVM-15L speakers, said to be 200w each. Are these original speakers? - The cab is said to be a notch smaller than an Ampeg 810. Is this even an original cab? If so, how would I know? Thanks.

I doubt it, as most bass cabs would be loaded with 15Bs, not 15Ls. But it's possible. The standard stock driver would likely have been CTS or Eminence, depending on the year of manufacture. OTOH the standard driver in the folded horn V4 cab was an Altec, so can you never know for sure unless you were the original owner.

Are you buying the cab from Craigslist? Ask for pics.

i've never seen a vintage one that came stock with EV's. most of them had CTS 15's in them, but i have seen Altecs come stock in those cabs before. IMO, EV15L's are ALOT better than the Altecs, or the EV15B's for bass.

I'm in Holland, buying via internet from another guy in Holland, I've seen two pics. But I'm very busy at the moment, I'll be back at TB in a couple of hours. Thanks!

The guy persists it's an original V6B with 70's EVM-15L speakers and 70's cab with id plate and typical vent hole. One'd have to put some effort in faking cab and speakers, so I think it's cool. But EVM-15B he says is more of a subwoofer while bass guitar is more of a MID instrument. I believe here on TB a different story was told about EVM-15L/B, but maybe I misinterpreted ... ?

As far as I know, Altec speakers were available as an upgrade for the V6B cab, but not EV speakers.

IMO, it's not difficult to install different speakers in an old speaker cab. as a matter of fact, in those old ampeg cabs it's very common.

those mesa road ready cabinets used ev15l drivers
i played one for a while, one of the 215 mesa cabinets, now it's just sitting up at the space because the ampeg 810 works better with my svt head

the mesa cabinet had plenty of bass response, i was eq'ing the bass down and still had flat response down to the open E string...good mids and plenty of high end response for the sound i like.

Sorry, I meant faking (new) speakers to resemble ones from the 70's might not always be that easy, and building a cab from scratch, or modify an existing cab to resemble another existing cab might not always be easy too.

Don't think it's a fake, but I do think it's not stock. Driver swaps on old cabs are common. EVM 15B/L have different responses, but neither are designed as subwoofer speakers. I sold my Mesa 215 because while they sounded great with many heads, they didn't pair well with my SVT.

It probably is a 70's cab that had the speakers replaced sometime in the last 30-40 years, fairly common thing to happen. If the guy isn't the original owner, he might think are original or maybe it was sold to him as such.

Anyway, the 15L is a pretty classic driver. Kind of dual purpose bass/guitar. Not extremely deep sounding but low enough, good mids/highs for bass. Pretty high spl. As long as the cabinet isn't huge or the porting is out of whack, you could expect close to 100 watts per driver before they start to fart out.

i think they'll handle a good bit more than 100 watts per driver, but i could be wrong.

I just looked it up in the Ampeg book, and not the V6B but the V4B 215 came with either Altecs or EVM-15L's. So this is likely a V4B cab with original drivers.

The guy says the shape of the vent porting shows it's a V6B ...

The link works, perhaps one of our guru's here could positively ID it.

And yes, a 15L starts farting at around 100watts each so 200 for the cab, regardless of what the ratings say. The good thing is, it's high enough spl where 200 watts gets pretty loud. They're good speakers for lower power amps.

for some reason, the phrase "100 watt of meer" just sounds funny.

That's gotta be a V-6B cabinet, with that center slot port. Should have either CTS or Altecs from the factory as stated before, but I'd take the EVM-15Ls over the stock CTS drivers all day long!
