I got a nice deal on a very nice SVT-3 Pro with a somewhat beat up Ampeg 410HF cab knowing this problem may happen, the price for both was lower than the price for either one alone should have been so I figured I can't lose.
I would just like to know what might be causing it though so I can look in the right areas to address the issue. The previous owner assumed the problem was in the cab but I'd like to know a little more before bringing either one to anyone.
At low volumes it is all OK for the most part, but if I send any power to the cab and I get loud and somewhat random pops from the speakers during those louder or lower notes. It isn't like a static build-up though and it happens at any setting on the amp. It's not the pots or any controls on the amp that I can tell, turning them does nothing except what they are supposed to do.
Any ideas? |

if it's not the tweeter, take off the grill and look at the speakers as you play and watch for suspicious behavior. also, you can GENTLY push around the dustcap of each speaker with even pressure and feel for rubbing...if it rubs, the voice coil is blown and the speakers have to be replaced or reconed.
fortunately, it's nothing you can't fix by throwing money at it

if sort of muffled, not really loud, Jimmy is likely on the trail of it.
If it is really LOUD, like a pistol shot, that is generally from over-powering the speaker with lows, so the cone hits the magnet. Not something I'd expect with a 3 pro unless you have the lows really boosted. If it was a 4pro bridged, I'd be more inclined to believe it.

Get yourself a Bergantino or any other good cab. It'll be like night and day... |

Or it actually could be a poorly designed cab and you just happen to like it...
Cheap drivers and cheap manufacturing make a cheap sounding cab... |

I used to hate on Ampeg gear until recently. Most of the backline provided when I do gigs out of town and I can't bring my own rig is Ampeg stuff. It's actually really good gear if you can spend a minute with it and get the feel of where your sound lies in the knobs. They can do anything as well as any amp or cab and sound like an Ampeg on top of it. Which is pretty cool.

The 410HighFrequency cab bottoms out at 60 HZ and playing notes below that could be part of the problem you are experiencing. Cheers.

This happens when I'm pushing my acoustic 370 hard through my mesa 1000 but with other heads never had the problem. And its just if I really abuse the bass and turn the lows all the way up... And its a rare thing but it does happen.

I never intended for it to be anything more than a backup, I have an MB 210 combo and a 112 combo but found an AE CXL-112 yesterday on Craigslist yesterday and it's whole 'nother world. I am selling one or both MBs after hearing this cab.
Good timing too because tonight is my *first* real gig. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
