Lightbulb Ampeg 4x10 Mod question

Sign in to disble this ad
I've attached a photo of an Ampeg 4x10 cab that I bought a few years back in hopes that someone may be able to explain to me exactly what the mod is that the previous owner did to it. The best info I can give to go on is that as it is currently set up, only two of the four speakers actually has any output. Any one with any info on what this mod is, why it would be done, and how to reverse it? Thanks in advance for any input, I know squat about the tech side of amps and cabs. I just like to plug in and rock

The mod is a twist-lock AC connector, which has no business being in a speaker cab. What was done inside can only be determined by going inside.

Thanks for the quick reply. Yeah, its a mystery to me what that plug is doing there. When I played out regularly, I always ran the cab along with a 1x15 and never really paid much attention to the fact that I was only getting output from two of the 10's. I may try to get a local shop to open it up and have a look see.

Take the input jack off with a screwdriver and shine some lights in there, snap some photos.

As this appears to be a bit of a one of a kind situation, I'll pop the back off and see if I can get some pics of the guts up in a few minutes to satisfy the curious

The thick black and white wires run from the plug to the input jack

My guess is that there is a power amp in there.

Pull a speaker and take some pics from the front. This is really odd.

The twistlock was added because the previous owner thought it was 'better' than the 1/4" jacks when used with his big Crown power amp... and now only two speakers work because they are wired series/parallel, and one of them is blown. That would disable one pair. Betcha.

Sounds like a pretty safe bet.

so, a guy trusts his (probably, i'm assuming considering the AC plug) bootleg Speakon-to-ac-plug speaker cable to a standard 1/4" jack?

at least the soldering isn't horrible. Who knows.

Assuming he put it in there before Speakons were available it's a lot better connection than a 1/4" jack. The problem with it is that someone might plug an AC cord into it, then it's bye-bye drivers. A friend of mine put similar rigs onto his 2x15 PA bins and sure enough he plugged them into AC. 110 volts of 60Hz into 15s made a real big noise... for about a half second.

I'm right with you, my guess is she'd do about 1800Watts worth of halfway between B to B flat for about 1/2 a second. Sure would be quite the PYRO show and the cones would end up looking like a couple of Madonna's Bras.

BOOM

Ya know, I understand why this got done, but really a pair of bananna plugs would have been a lot cooler than stroking up the Milwaukee hammer drill and boring a massive hole in the cabinet. He could have gotten the banannas at radio shack too...
