Ampeg 4x10 SVT HLF and SVT CL

Sign in to disble this ad
I just picked up this head and cab and am digging it so far. I am using a fender j bass. I have been reading a lot here that people like sealed cabs vs ported for the CL head. And that the 4x10 HFL might not be a good fit for it. Essentially I am hoping that I did not make a mistake. Are there people out there that like this combo? Can dialing back the bass (if need be) be enough of a solution, for practice, shows, recording? Are the tubes counter productive for this cab? Looking for more opinions on this exact match; thanks!

If you dig the tone, then rock it hard! Rolling the bass knob back on the SVT CL is a good idea when playing live - especially when you have PA subs near you. If you want more tone control, add an EQ pedal. Otherwise, these two items work fine together.

Some will say the sealed cabinet and tube amp sound is "the bass tone". Just a different vibe, that's all.

Good bass tone starts with your hands.

+1 you don't need any more confirmation than your own 2 ears.

I'm considering this setup myself! I have the SVT CL Im just debating as to sealed or ported. I think I'll have an 810 and then a ported 410 for the best of both worlds and a rig that suits most venue sizes!

I recently was indoctrinated into the SVT cult, and there ain't no turning back. I knew I wanted the SVT-CL, and was afraid of the size and weight of the 810E. I also read a lot and found the numbers on the 410HLF to be pretty impressive. Good for 5 string B thunder.

And what's better than 1 cab? I picked up one used and ordered one new. Some slight differences, same sound.

I would guess that rig really pisses off your guitar player.

There are people who say not to use ported cabs with SVT's. They are known affectionately as "nutjobs."

I used a 410 HLF a few times with an SVT. I didn't like it nearly as much as using a sealed cab. Way too boomy for my taste.

To each it's own. Get Berg, get out of the mud!

i have a vint Jazz, for past year or two, I have used svt cl and the same cab as you...
I back of the bass knob. Depending on whether lo bass button is used. bass knob can be as low as 830 to 1200 o clock, max.
I have not stopped wondering about the same questions, you are at present.
I tried an 8 10 cab with an svt pro 4 last night.. and goodness, that thing sounded delicious.
For me, it has always been ( 40 years now ) a constant balancing of highs, mids, lows, and punch for finger style plus slap, plus jaco harmonics- endless searching for me. A sealed cab ( conventional wisdom, anyway) has more punch but less bass.... etc etc etc.
I am thinking of switching in order to get closer to the sound that is in my "head".
The problem comes down to practical issue.. we have limited time, money, space for amps, and **gigs to hear the gear**. edit ** back in the day, we played as long as 6 hour gigs for 5 or 6 nights. You get a terrific opportunity to knit pick about gear and your technique. If gigs are sparse, I would say, play as much as possible at home AND in rehearsals and in even lower paying gigs... just to fine tune your sound/ skills.

Sometimes best to work with what you have. If you do switch, you run risk of missing what the previous bass or amp/ cab, had!
But for me, Ampeg with tube(s) is closest to the sound in my head.
