ampeg 810s: quick history of speaker types

Sign in to disble this ad
could anybody just walk thru a quick little history of when ampeg switched speakers in their 810 cabinets over the years (mainly 70s thru 79)? i have a 71 flatback with CTS speakers, i know they stopped using those somewhat early on, and theres a local shop in my area that has an ampeg with EVs which the owner swears by. what are some of the other speaker types ampeg used back in the day, why were they changed over the years, and what is everyones opinion on the tone of each?

Totally unrelated to the question, but your sig says you're in the Osedax, do you guys plan to play Jaxx or anywhere like that soon?

I'm no Ampeg expert but I have never heard of EV speakers being stock on Ampeg gear.

+1. Haven't heard of it, but I'm far from an expert on this stuff.

I know that the early cabs were CTS, eminence followed in the mid-70s. The eminence speakers changed over time with the originals 70s/early 80s? sounding more like the CTS speakers, later ones being a different design AFAIK. IIRC from my ampeg book during the 90s there were Eden and then Celestion speakers available as an upgrade for the 810s in the pro models.

THIS. Unless you're on with a national that will draw, you will end up working your ass off for little or nothing in return. Last time we played there, Testament headlined and we still ended up selling tickets at our cost and promoting the bejesus out of it.

yup. selling tickets is a waste of time unless youre in highschool and can sell to every friend in the lunch room. and for the amount of tix you sell they dont pay you ****.

so in short, no thanks jaxx.

This is very true honestly, right now I'm working with some people to try and reopen Sterling Community Center for shows, without all the pay to play crap that's been going on around this area

dont wanna burst the bubble on that one, but that place costs like 800 just to rent for a show, plus you gotta have a cop present at all time, and the sound in there is atrocious (and it should be, its a gym).

id LOOOOVE if you could find a place in sterling and open it up for metal shows. you should look into this place called The Underground (i think), it used to be Ned Devines.

Yeah, but there was the dollar store across the street and you wouldn't believe how much hilarity can ensue when you throw out about two dozen swimming pool float noodles into the crowd. ALL. WIN.

Monthly Metal at Balls Bluff Tavern in Leesburg is really starting to pick up, and its always been a blast playing out there (just played this past Saturday). Talk to Toby from Above the Altar and see about hopping on a show.

toby does an awesome job there and we've played there a few times but he only does one show there a month, and we need a place that we can do more shows than just once a month. plus we just need more venues in general.

Hrrm, have you been to Julito's in College Park? That place has always seemed like it has potential, but just kinda lacked organization for getting the bands in.

My problem is I need all ages available places (being seventeen and all) that are metal/hardcore friendly. Sterling being the only place besides Jaxx that really allows that, with the Underground being an exception sometimes.

Doh... dagger. Booking shows really opens up once you hit bar-age. Your best bet probably to check out some house shows. Maybe the Garage in Manassas?

I haven't thought about there yet actually... The biggest problem is I'm in Ashburn, everywhere else is either Sterling, Springfield, or otherwise, so no matter what we have a bit of a drive. The best venue I've played yet though is definitely Mt. Airy Firehall, in MD it's the perfect hardcore setting.

sorry...had to go to a funeral.

anyway...

69-74 - cts's, the king daddy of svt 810 speakers, even though they don't handle too much wattage. altec 425a's were available as upgrade speakers, but i've yet to see any cabs with them.

74-now - some sort of eminences. the only bad ones i've ever heard were in the cabs made from 2001-2006.

ev's were never in the 810 as oem gear, but the 15-L was an upgrade speaker for the v4b 215 folded cab.

personally, i wouldn't mind a return to upgrade speakers. nowadays they come with what they come with, which are good, but i certainly wouldn't mind something a little more cts-like as an upgrade. of course, this would probably mean reduced power handling, but i'm ok with that
