Ampeg B-15N Cleaning Recommendations

Sign in to disble this ad
Okay, just got the bulbs replaced in the '66 B-15N head with neon blue ones. I was hoping they would be brighter but it still looks cool nonetheless. I'm looking for recommendations on how to clean up the oxidation on the top of the chrome chassis. I have 0000 steel wool and Simichrome polish, would that work? Any other tips for making this look better other than doing a complete restoration? I wish the blue would have come out better, doesn't show up very well during the day!

NO STEEL WOOL!!! Use a non-abrasive chrome polish and a soft cloth, and if you can't get all the oxidation off, just live with it. I use some stuff that comes in a can that has little fibers that pull out and you rub it on the surface. Doesn't remove lettering, works good enough.

Okay (puts steel wool back in toolbox), what is the stuff you're talking about?

You would have to ask me that, wouldn't you??? I can't find it right now, but I bought it at Home Depot.

I would try the Simichrome polish with a soft cotton cloth since you have it. Remove the screws and do them separately so you can get into the slots. Use a mild soap and warm water mix to do the areas with lettering.

I use a product called Autosol Metal Polish. It is a polishing paste like Simichrome. Very good stuff.

Any recommendations for getting out that stubborn (I'm guessing) dirt from the tolex? I've been using a tooth brush and some simple green cleaner, but doesn't seem to shake the more caked on stuff.

simple green (let it soak a little to start to emulsify the grime) and a stiff nylon brush is what i usually i use and it's removed the stubborn stuff very well.

i've also used Einzett plastic deep cleaner with excellent results:
