AMPEG B-15R reissue - discontinued

Anyone has any idea why Ampeg would discontinue what might arguably be their more compelling product offering? Isn't the Ampeg B-15 the most classic of classic amps? What gives?

Because it didn't sell very well. How many bassists do you know that own one?

The B-15, yes... the Reissue is not the same amp. The B-15R is more closely related to the V4-B (i believe). It is a cool amp in it's own right, and has the look of one of the best bass amps ever made, but it's heavy!!! Not at all a very practical amp.

If you're gonna do studio stuff, it's cool on half power, or you would just use an actual low power tube amp.

If your gigging with it, it's only 100w (most people want more - see SVT), and it's a huge amp to haul around... a V4-B head with separate cab would make much more sense.

Besides that, I had a "genuine" B15N. The tone was gorgeous, but the volume/weight ratio was pretty bad. Now I have a BA115. Not exactly the same tone, but actually pretty close it though all solid state. The B15R used to sell at 2,500 € here, a new BA115 is less than 400 € and delivers 99% of the B15 tone.

It seems the vast majority of younger players want an 810 cabinet. Probably because it looks mean, or they feel the need to play very loud.

If loudness were a measure of musical quality, we would have very little musical history.

It was also very expensive to make. I absolutely love mine but it definitely has its own character compared to an old B15N. It was discontinued in 2007 if I'm not mistaken.

Yeah, it was the first model cut from the line-up after the sale to LOUD. So, it's been a while. Great amp for sure, and +1 to the "it's like a V4BH" comment. Same amp I believe, but they were really expensive.

I see. Certainly the B-15 would make sense in their heritage series.
