Ampeg B2 Combo w/ a Shure 15"

About 15 yrs ago I bought a used Ampeg B2 combo for $500. I love the amp. Sounds great. It's got a decent amount of road rash...which I love. Anywhooo, I noticed long ago that the 15" speaker had a weird design in the center of the cone. I didnt think much about it until this week when I was looking for a cab to possibly go with it at music stores & none of the other Ampeg cabs had this speaker. I opened it up just now and the speaker is a SHURE.

Does anyone know if this is a replacement speaker or did Ampeg use these at some point?

Also, are these good speakers???

thanks in advance for any info!

Is far as I can remember Shure never made any speakers themselves, they were spec'ed from other makers.
Supply some pics and any numbers stamped on the speaker maybe we can identify the original maker.

the serial # is 814201205. the only other thing on the speaker is a large SHURE stencil cast into the housing.

And most definitely not an original from Ampeg.

Post pics of the whole speaker, I am sure someone will be able to help identify it's origin.

Need to see the rear of the speaker basket. You will have to remove the speaker if the cab does not have a removable rear panel.

Has some cues of an EV cone.

...the cone looks a bit like a typical 80's cast frame Eminence however the frames were usually painted as opposed to the brushed aluminum look -any photos of the frame?

That is an odd ball! Looks like a University frame style but the Shure has been molded into the casting. Any other ink stamped numbers anywhere?

I presently have a B2 combo and it's not that speaker...
The owner's manual mention a 15” Ampeg Custom.
I think yours has been replaced with that Shure 15

wow, never saw this one previously -would imagine this is pretty rare -most pa or mi companies that outsource a speaker company usually just have their logo artwork glued to the back of the magnet (as example; Yamaha logo on the magnet of an Eminence speaker) however the "Shure" logo is actually part of the frame....all I can say is "????"

No idea how it sounds, but you said it sounds great. No problem from where I'm sitting.

Wow, Shure hasn't made speaker systems for quite a long time, and all were for public address. I'm sure it came from an old Vocalmaster cab. If it sounds good, use it.
