Ampeg B2RE vs GK Rb800/700?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey so Im looking to upgrade from my old behringer ultrabass head to something new. Im kind of on a budget though, but I was able to find good pricing on a used ampeg B2RE ($200) and both a GK rb 800 ($350) and an rb 700 ($380). Now I don't know much about these amps and have not gotten the chance to play them. So I was wondering if any one has played either and can give me a rundown of what you thought were the pros and cons to the amp were. Im trying to get a little fatter and more progressive/smoother bass tone (if that makes any sense) than I am from my behringer. So if anyone could point me in which direction of amp that could help me accomplish that would be very appreciated. Also if you think there is a better budget amp with great tone out there please suggest it. Thank you!

The Ampeg is their budget line, the Gk's are world standards.

I did not realize the B2RE was ampeg's budget line thank you for that bit of information. So I take it that the GK is probably overall the better amp. My only cause for concern is that people have said the tone is a bit "sterile". Any comments on this?

The boost pot is there to unsterilize it and add a nice growl and warmth to it. With a good cab, it sounds great.

I would suggest the ampeg pf350 or the pf500. These heads are $299 and $399 new. These amps are probably closer to what your looking for tonally. Even though the price is low they are solid amps with great tone.

Finally got a chance to check out some gk heads at a local guitar center. I got to play through a back line 600 and a rb 400. I must say I was quite impressed with both. They sound ten times better then my behringer amp head haha. I think im almost ready to make the change.
