Ampeg B410 HE issue

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi everyone,

First post here, so any help is much appreciated!

I've recently started having problems with an Ampeg B410 HE cab. I'm getting a 'cracking' sound when I push the amp to a certain level. The 'cracks' are pretty brutal and very noticeable, and they appear without the amp being up particularly loud.

When I roll off some bass they disappear, so I'm guessing there must be a problem with one or more of the woofers. Turning the tweeter all the way down does not resolve the issue, so I'm also guessing the problem isn't there.

I'm using a 500W Orange Terror Bass head. I've not mistreated the cab in any way, never played that loud, but I did buy it second hand so maybe there was a problem in the making caused by the previous owner.

Does this issue sound familiar? Should I be looking for replacement drivers for the cab, and if so which models would be adapted? I'm pretty sure there is sound coming from all four units, so none of them appear to have blown entirely... Maybe the problem is something else I haven't thought of?

Any help would be great, thanks in advance!

If it turns out you need to replace the speakers i would suggest the new eminence legend b810. They were desinged to be used in sealed ampeg cabs and are a great speaker and you can get them for $69 each.

Sounds like it's probably a blown speaker.

I'd check the obvious first before you go buying stuff. Loose wires, shorts, loose hardware, etc. If one of the speakers looks like it's moving a lot farther than the others when you play it, it's blown.

Thanks everyone, I'll start checking those points.

On a side note, the only way into the cab is... via the input jack plate on the back, yeah? I can't get the grill off and just check the way the speakers move from the front...?

Cheers...

The grill cloth will come off. The best way is to slightly unscrew one of the Ampeg logo screws, grab some pliers or multi grips and pull. You can also stick a knife/small screwdriver in between the cloth and the wood and wedge it out that way.
