Ampeg BA 115HP fuse problem, please help.

Sign in to disble this ad
When I bought the amp back in 06', I decide to separate the amplifier from the speaker cabinet. This allowed me to hook up different speakers to my amp. I created a small size, wooden box for the amplifier with a instrument connector and a on/off switch (to switch to other speakers if i wanted to) that was on the surface of the box. All was working fine until one day left it on while doing some chores. When I came back to have some Jamming Time no sound was coming out of the speaker. I suddenly realized that the audio cable plugged into the amp box was half way plugged in. "The fuse must have blown due to the circuit shortage," I thought to myself. And surely enough when I opened it the fuse was fried. But something else was also blown out. This black, flat and round sort of thing was cracked about half way.

Specifics:
- Has a Ceramic cover.
-Reads: VEI 010--- (The rest was blown to bits)
-Could be a: Resistor, Thermistor, Posistor, Varistor, etc. (I dont know)

Location within the amp:
-It was located between the Black Cable AC input and the fuse holder.

Location within Schematics:
-All I could get was (NET 00098).

Can Anyone Identify it?
Thank you.......

P.S- I touched it and it shocked me so.....ahhh.

To my knowledge the only components on the AC side of the power transformer are a pair of .0033uF/250V capacitors. Any way you could get a close-up pic?

it would be an in-rush protector....... it reduces the large surge of current when you turn on the amp. Allows use of a sensible sized fuse that actually protects, instead of a too-big one that will stand the surge current.

They are "application specific" not "one size fits all".

You'll need to get one from Loud, or maybe from LS Electronics, who have a lot of NOS Ampeg parts. Possibly fliptops, dunno about them.

Hmmm, Well I called Ampeg Services in order to get the specifics on the inrush protector but they told me that there was no such thing showing up on the schematics (he was right, it didn't have it there). I kept telling him that it was located between the fuse holder and the incoming AC voltage but he had no idea of what it was so i just gave up.

My question is how can I find out what type of Protector I have in my Amp....

Thank you..
