Question Ampeg BA115 replacement tweeter?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey,
My tweeter is buzzing contantly now. I would still like to have a tweeter in my amp though. I need to know the size of the tweeter (my amp is at the church), and suggestions for a better tweeter without moding my current bass amp. Looking for a plug and play or solder and play for that matter.

who is this?

Sorry dave, I don't know you. I live in North Platte, Nebraska and I bought my amp from a friend a couple of years ago. Sorry that you have been mistreated by someone. I will pray for you.

If the OP had sold you his amp with its blown tweeter why would he be searching for a driver to fix what he no longer owned??? Methinks you owe the OP an apology.

That said, I DO commiserate with you. Buying used gear is always a risk. A replacement driver or just its diaphragm, if available, is not all that much.

If it is working, but buzzing, check to make sure the screws holding the driver onto the horn are tight. They tend to vibrate loose and cause buzzing. I've had the same issue. The diaphragm was fine. Put a dab of nail polish (or lock tite) on the screw before tightening.

I own a BA115. On day 2 I disconnected the tweeter. Mine hummed something awful, plus I don't like tweeters anyway. I think it sounds just fine, maybe better without it.

sounds good without tweeter hooked up.

I've actually had my tweeter disconnnected for quite some time now and I like the sound. Would be nice to have a touch more brightness sometimes though. Thanks for the posts all!

Partsexpress.com has replacement tweeters starting @ $1.97..... give it a look, their prices are very competitive.

Seems like tweeter hiss is a real Ampeg BA115 problem...

I own 1 myself, but will i do hear a soft hiss coming from the amp when turned on, I only hear it when i focus on it (bit comparable with the sound of a pc fan)

BA115s are known to always have tweeter hum. IMO they are one of the worst amp designs by Ampeg (and yes I have had my BA115 for over 7 years). My BA115 now sits in a corner of a room collecting dust.

Some fixes that other people have used (un-wiring the tweeter), installing a new one.... or my personally favorite, just ignore it and realize for $250.00 you only get soo much.

They are a bunch of threads on the BA115 that will give better advice. I hope this helps.

I think "thegiftofdave" is just a troll with someone with too much time on their hands. This was his first post EVER.

I got hold of one of these and the amp part was fried. Removed it and use it with my Aguilar TH500. At first there was a horrible "fffffffffffffttt" sound. Didn't like it at all. Then I disconnected the LeSon horn and now it sounds sweet.
It is 4 ohms of tiltback, monitor-like thump withbnot much weight and fine tone!

Hi.
Just changed the "LeSon" Piezzo with its harsh top by a "true" basic tweeter: Monacor or IMGStageLine HT-30.
Both are the same, based on old Foster design.
It is 1/2 inch coil which fits perfecty in existing hole, even screws stay at the same place. It is in the 10/20$ range.
Ideally, you also need a true filter, at least 5kHz/12dB/oct.
I am using a Monacor DNH-185 that fits the bill.
It is filtered @ 5500Hz/18dB/oct.
No more SHSHSH, no harsh top.
You can even push trebble a bit on the equaliser.
There is (still) a hole in the high mids... but it is not a HIFI cab ;-)
This tweeter is 8 ohms, so it should drain minimal power in front of the 4 ohm 15" . Efficiency is rated at 98 db, but in a 4 ohm world, it is equivalent to 95 dB, a bit less that what is expected from the 15".
In my opinion, the BEST option should be to take the high components of the BA115HP, i.e. a 1 inch comp with a lower frequency for the filter, but it is another story, and also another budget.
