Which Ampeg cab to pair with Ampeg PF500?

Sign in to disble this ad
Just ordered a PF500 - I have a choice between 3 different Ampeg Cabs, all 4ohms, all used in good shape, all just under $300 . These are in my budget, and I want one 4 ohm cab
Also, how will the power of the PF500 handle each cab...

Ampeg B410HLF - 400RMS - 80lbs ($275)

Ampeg PR410HLF - 600RMS - 128lbs ($300obo)

Ampeg BXT115HLF - 400 RMS - 105lbs ($250)
(I had this same cab before, but always ran it with paired with a 210 bxt)

The music I'll mostly be playing will be older pop/blues/funk/rock in a cover band that will be playing outdoor events as well as bars/clubs.

So which do you think would pair best with the PF500?
I already tried the PF115 Cab...it's not me

PR410HLF gets my vote. The B410HLF is a lower model cab IIRC. A single 15 can't cut it like four ten's can.*

*I know, I know, there are some competitive LF drivers out there.

PR410hlf. Actually, none of them but out of those choices, PR410hlf.

Although I voted for the PR410, I love all these cabs but don't forget Chiropractic care and back surgery.

LOL...NO WONDER the "pocket rocket" trend has caught on! Including cabs! LOL

Didn't dig one PF115 for louder rock....can't afford two....

So Jimmy, what is it you recommend in that range?

810e. If you're willing to lug around a 130 lb 410, might as well suck up another 30 lbs and get an 810e. You can find good used deals on them, too.

Agreed on the weight - I voted for the PR410HLF for the sake of sound, but I'd never haul one around. My Eden D410T is supposedly in the weight range of the B410HLF, and I don't see any reason to bring anything heavier than that to my gigs!

Maybe something like this:

Amp & guitars For SALE

It's an "ampeo," so you know it's good.
Seriously, though, maybe search through craigs or other used sources for something with dual 15's.

I voted for the PR cuz the extra 200 watts for 25$ more, they are nice and solid cabs... also no carpet or soft cover material to tear while carrying it...

But I must says , I have owned a B410HLf since 2003 and I still liked it a lot, it's not so heavy and I found a part of my sound in it, but the extra 200 watts in the PR worth it IMO...
I paired it with a classic 610HLF (600 watts) to move more air in the room, the 610HLF is a bit more low mid voiced (more classical) than my B410HLF. I prefer the high mid voice in my B410HLF though, escecially for slap, funk tones... If I had to bring only one cab to a show that would be the 610HLF for more power, playing death metal... They could be a nice option too...

hope that helps...

I voted for none, sorry...

I agree with Jimmy, you should just get an 810 if you're going to consider the PR410HLF. I had one that never left my house for a little while that I got for dirt cheap, and I ended up selling it because it was never going to leave my basement. That thing is extremely cumbersome. I'd say without a doubt that moving an 810 around was easier. I could barely get that PR410hlf in to my car to take it home when I bought it. If I HAD to pick though, based on sound alone, I'd go with the PR410HLF.

I agree with JimmyM on going for the 810e.. It's actually easier on your back to transport too, bc you don't have to hunch over so much when you move it. I picked mine up for $250 from a friend of a friend, but there's almost always at least one on craigslist for something around $500 and you can usually talk them down from there.

Sorry Chiropractors, while i gave the PR some good thought, I wound up grabbing the B410hlf for now. I wound up getting it for $220. I'll save my back and a little bit of dough, and it fits in my car. If I decide I want to change cabs out later on, I'll be able to break even or better on the cab

The B410HLF is a good cab. Should be fine.

Yeah, I won't personally use anything that heavy. Also, I like 12's. I voted for the 410 hlf just because it was the lightest. But, at 80+ pounds, it's not exactly light.

Yeah, true. But I lug over 80 lbs worth of cab a lot of the time, too, although they're in separate cabs. And when I get really inspired, I bring an 810. I figure that the load in and out lasts a few minutes, but some of my gigs are over 3 hours with a long-ass soundcheck/rehearsal before the show, and that's a long time to listen to a rig that's not getting it for me just because it's light.

Having said that, I got a really perverse pleasure last night from packing up my Micro VR/210 and P Lyte and hauling ass out the door before anyone noticed I skipped the meet and greet I hate those meet and greets. Everyone just wants to talk to Bowzer and we just stand there like dorks.

I run the B410HLF with the PF500 and play the same music you do. You will be happy with it.

I would rather talk to Jimmy than Bowzer - but he has had an interesting career. Not exactly a superstar but many over 40's probably know of his work with ShaNaNa. Of course we all know Jimmy and talk with him daily.
