Ampeg Flip Top 2x15 with Ampeg V4 and JBL 2225's
Feel like we need a "cabinet" forum sometimes but I suppose this is the right spot.
Running an Ampeg fliptop 2x15 with an Ampeg v4 head loaded with 2 JBL 2225's. I play old R&B and Soul.
I like the sound of the JBL's but yes they are missing some mids. I nearly dimed (exaggeration but you get the idea) the mids on the v4 playing a wedding held in a gym last night. Things are working but I feel like they could work better.
I don't have the funds to replace both speakers and I kind of like the character of the bass the JBL is delivering I just wish there were more mids/more presence. They move plenty o' air though to be sure.
I know that you can run into phase issues (and others) running different speakers in the same cab but....
...in the ampeg cab both 15's are sealed off from one another. Can I use the 2225 on the bottom and something with some more mids on top?
If so, what kind of 15" (16 ohm) would work well in this kind of set up?
If you could find a 16 ohm K140 to put in the top position, that would be the best option. If you're using a V4, can't you change impedance or run a separate line out of the external (one to each speaker) if you can't find a 16ohm?
There are two speaker jacks and you can change the impedance but I'm a little leery of mixing speaker impedances.
Currently I'm running those 2225 which are 16 ohm a piece and I've got them wired up for eight ohm together.
If you need more mids and highs you could add a top box with a midrange, tweeter and a suitable crossover.
I might try to find a similar rated 410 to add on. Lots of gear to haul though so try outboard eq, like a pedal, pre, or even just tone controls on the bass.
I'd just crank the mids and pocket the money ;)
Probably sage advice.
