Ampeg Isovent Cabinet

Sign in to disble this ad
I saw an Ampeg cabinet for sale recently that looked very interesting. I have never seen it before and I had thought that I had seen EVERYTHING Ampeg:

Isovent 2 x 10's and 2 x 15's

Ampeg Isovent Bass Cab

Does anyone have experience with this cabinet?

Not that one, but the DD12 Isovent (two 12s). Sounded huge for it's size but weighed a ton and a half.

The isobaric concept has been around for years, Orange is making some cabs like this today.

Wow I didn't know there was a DD12 Isovent...I had the regular DD-12 (non-Iso, with front- and rear-firing drivers) and it killed, but definitely a different beast.

I've had 2, sold them both to a band member, so I could get the $ I needed and still get to use them. There were at least a couple variations, with different drivers; 1 had cast frame, one stamped IIRC. I know that one of mine was front ported, one rear ported. Sounded very good, amazingly heavy but manageable to move solo as long as you don't encounter stairs. I remember fitting one into a mid-size 90's 4 door sedan, which would be hard with standard cabs.

One of the experts might chime in on the isobaric design, or a search on "isovent" could turn it up as it has been posted before, but IIRC it provides the characteristics of a box roughly twice the size. Not the same as a 2X15 cabinet, but it does save space at the expense of weight. I tend to just like or dislike cabs based on the way they sound, and thought both of my Isovents sounded pretty good. The price is about right if it's in good shape. They're fairly rare but not sought after or collectible. I paid more than that for one of mine, new but floor demo on closeout shortly after they were discontinued. The other one I paid less for much more recently.
