Ampeg or Marshall

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey...just played an Ampeg v4 last night...it said v4 on the front of the head and vt-22 on the back...awesome!

I am looking at a Marshall JCM-800 100 watt head but couldn't find alot of info...

Anyone care to share an opinion about the Marshall...compare it to an Ampeg v4 or 4pro.
It's for stoner rock and may do a couple amps and cabs to compete with the guitars and drums but really curious about the Marshall head...

Thanks!

I have used Marshall's for years and love them. More distortion that the V4B and less low end, I let the PA handle the low end. either are good amps imho. If it is one or the other I would take the Marshall.

I'm thinking both with an 8x10 and a 2x15(I love a 2x15)...but then which head for which cab...aaargh!
Think 4x10 and 1x15 is enough...oh my aching back!

I would choose the Marshall in your case. Its mid heaviness will help cut through easier in a mix of down tuned / distorted guitars...

Incorrect. A v4 is THE Doom/Stoner bass amp.

That or an old Matamp or a Sunn. Marshall's are overrated anyway.

I'd get a vintage Marshall Superbass, Marshall Major, or Ampeg SVT over either of those choices.

Marshall JCM800 is a high gain amp primarily used by guitarist. I prefer the Ampeg V4 over a JCM800 as I like to have some clean headroom.

AHHH!!! Turn those Marshall cabs 90° so that they're couple with the floor and the wheel are not in the way.

New Marshall's are overrated. Old Superbasses are proven work horses.

****I just realized the OP mentioned a JCM 800. If your going Marshall be sure to go Superbass****

You are correct - The v4 is widely used in the stoner metal scene. Guitarist that are into doom here like to scoop out their mids. Hence why I suggested the Marshall.

Doom is huge in Southeast, KY & Northeast, TN .

The top brands in the are Sunn, Mark series Peavey's, and Acoustic Control Corp...

I have 2 JCM 800 Bass Series Superbass MK II 100w amps.

I've kinda switched over to my JCM 800 Bass Series Superbass MK II w/ 1935a Bass 4x12 from my Boogie M2000 w/ 2 RR 1x15s. I got bored and am in love w/ my new setup.

I've used it the last 3 gigs, my guitarists use Marshall JCM 900/Laney Pro tube 100 thru marshall 1960a 4x12s. The mix is incredible.

I play Crossover (punk/thrash). The dirt, grind, & dynamics are awesome w/ the volume on around 6-7. I use a '76 P.

I also have a PTP '71 superbass, but prefer the JCM 800 MK II.

My other JCM 800 is up on ebay right now, pm me if you want to talk about a deal.

I have a friend who plays slightly doomy punked out thrash with a bit of goth and just a hint of death with grunge overtones presented in a stoner metal theme. Which amp would be best for him?

If he likes some grind and dirt he should consider an Orange AD200.

I had a Marshall Superbass years ago and it was excellent for valve-driven punchy tone - instant Bruce Foxton if you like.

Only problem was it was only 100 watts and I have a feeling that Ampeg's 100 watts may go louder. The Marshall was great until you needed to go louder then you were knackered.

Mine blew up in the end. Or something. What a warm, punchy sound though.

.
I've got both a V4B and a MkII superlead - the marshall has a tad more gas in the tank - 4 6550s as opposed to 4 7027s. Both excellent heads.
