The Ampeg pf 500 an improvement over B2?

Sign in to disble this ad
I have an American made B2 combo 1 15, it's a good amp but the tone is a bit sterile. I run it with a 2 10 extension cab so it's plenty loud for me. Wondering if I would hear a vast improvement in tone with the pf 500.
If my budget would allow I would get an SVT 3 pro ( I got to play one a couple weeks ago at a gig) but money's tight.
Somebody with experience with the B2 and the pf 500, help please.

I like the PF500 a lot better. I think you would hear an improvement, but of course, that's in the ear of the beholder.

I was hoping you would answer my thread Jimmy since you seem to be the Ampeg Guru here. I subbed for a band 2 weeks ago and I got to use the headliners rig ( SVT3 pro with an 8 10 Ashdown), after the gig the guys in the band were all grinning, telling me how great I was, blah, blah blah. I dont think I played any better than usual but man that tone was unbelievable. I quit playing for a few years and I sold all my equipment when I did. ( an SVT 2 pro and an 8 10 for $500 ) What the hell was I thinking. I got back into playing 2 years ago and being broke now all I could afford was that b2. I've been chasing my old tone ever since (even bought a VT bass pedal ). It just aint the same...

I have the PF-500 and I can honestly say it's worlds apart from the B2/R/RE. The voicing is very different, IMO. The PF-500 is smoother and a lot of lows/low mids. The B2R/REs are more mid-high voiced IMO and have a very harsh bite when pushed. The PF-500, especially with a little compression on there, keeps the grind without being too brittle.
