Ampeg PF500 with mixed cabs..

Ok, I know the general consensus is mixed cabs are bad m'kay.. But in some cases they work well together. (well thats what I gather from the searches I've done on here)

Has anyone tried the PF500 (or 350) with the Ampeg 115 AND 210 PF cabs?

I have the 500 head.. am about to pony up the cash for the cab this week with a second cab in the next month or so.

Totally undecided between the 210, 115 or 2 X 115s or 2 X 210s

Juan Alderete mixes his cabs. Two PF500's with a 210 and 115 under each. I haven't done it, and I won't. I prefer playing it safe. Even $400 is a lot of scratch to spend for a rig that may or may not work, but I know two of the same always works.

Pf 500 with an ashdown 8ohm 410. Running 300 watts til I get a second cab. Sounds great. I was thinking of adding a 115 but I was told that I'm better off going a second 410. The 115 is way cheaper though.

Even those who have can't comment on the best sounding combination unless they tried not just the 115 with the 210 but also two 115s and two 210s, all in the same session. Even then what sounded best to them might not sound the best to you. It's like buying a car. I read the test reports and ratings, but I still make my choice based on my test drive, not someone else's.

I'm running the PF500 into both an Ampeg 115 & 112 and it sounds delicious, especially with my Yamaha Attitude just destroying it!

I’m one of the ones who use to run 10s over 15s and they sounded great - but I biamped them with a GK800RB and got lucky. With that said - I recommend getting two matching 115’s.

Thanks guys, I'm really after someone who has actually tried, specifically, the PF210 and PF115 together (the portaflex posting list has a zillion people who WANT to try it.. but no real feedback that I can see of anyone who HAS tried it).

Bill I really like your response here. I love your work but sometimes I fear that newer guys get the impression that if they mix cabs their rig will blow up. This successfully states your (well educated) opinion and understands that mixed rigs do work for some people. Thanks for this.

I've never said that a mixed rig can't work. What I've consistently said is that there's no way to predict how it will work, nor can you say if a particular mixed rig works as well as or better than non-mixed unless you've tried both. Yes, many players are happy with their mixed rigs. Would they have been happier with identical cabs? Unless they tried both options before buying they'll never know.
