Ampeg pr810h or Mesa PH810

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm going to be purchasing an 810 cab in the next month or so and I want to know which would be a better choice between the Ampeg pr810h and the Mesa PH810.

I have zero experience with either of these cabs and there aren't any available around here to try out so "buy the one that sounds best to your ears" isn't an option.

I read great things about both these cabs, so I know how awesome they are but I want some feedback from TBers that have experience with them.

I play in a metal band. Amp will be a Mesa M9 Carbine. I play a Peavey Cirrus 5 string active bass. It will be paired with a Fender 215 Pro.

Thanx for your input.

I used to play a 2001 Ampeg 810e, with my Peavey Tour 700, and Spector Euro 5LX. It was time for a cabinet upgrade, and I went Mesa, with no regrets

I went with the 412 as I found one locally, but it honestly completely destroys my older Ampeg, you can actually feel the bass from this cab.

I believe that specific Ampeg may be ported, so it may be able to handle lower frequencies better, but I thought that the low end was lacking in my Ampeg.

Just IMO.

Thanx for your the response.

I should mention that it will be paired with a Fender 215 Pro. Think the 215 will be overkill or just pure heaven?

I would think that any 2 big cab rig would be overkill (though I plan on saving up for another Mesa someday). If you're gonna do the whole 2 cab rig, get identical cabs. Either two Fender 215's or two Ampeg 810's. If you go with matching cabs, you don't have to worry about phase cancellation. If you don't know what phase cancellation is, do a search on TB, tons of stuff will come up.

Some people run different cabs and say they have no problems. It could work really well for you, but since you have no way of testing out your current cab with the ones you're considering, my best suggestion would be to get identical cabs.

Mesa or Aguilar.
2x15 with an 8x10 you will be dissapointed. Generally a 4x10 matches better with a 2x15. Thouhg it more difficult getting an 8 ohm 2x15 than a 4 ohm 4x10, assuming you want both cabs to match impedances to run from one head.

My head can handle 2ohm so that's not a problem.

I already have the 2x15 and it's a 4ohm cab. I'll how it sounds paired up with the 810. If it doesn't sound good I won't use them together.

Mesa all the way - stay with the manufacturer of the head. I also own the M9 and with a ph610 its all I need to bury 2 guitarists and a drummer!

That's what I think I'll be doing. Found one for an alright price. I'm sure it will sound amazing.

I'd go with ampeg ^.^ mesas are really nice for guitar. Never really liked their bass amps as much as ampeg, but it's personal preferance.

Yeah, I use an M-pulse 600 thru a PH810, and it's way more than I need for my extremely loud 2 guitar modern rock/metal band - definitely Mesa!!!

Mesas are like stingrays, unsubtle and aggressive. I think their bass gear is mostly awesome. About the 2x15 and 8x10 thing, the ohms may be right for a 4ohm 8x10 and 2x15 but the 8x10 will be quite louder than the 2x15. To the point that you are bassically throwing away watts. I would say go for 2-2x15 cabs if that is the tone yo like and you need to be loud. 15" speakers IMO do have a tone that is somewhat missing in 8x10 arrays. But then I also dont think anyone should waste time playing any 15 cab but a mesa TL606 style FTW!
