Ampeg - Should I get this??? Tips

Sign in to disble this ad
I found an used Ampeg 2-15 for sale on Craigslist for $500, mint condition.

I just wanted to know what anyones thoughts on this particular cab were, or what about the price for it. Should I go lower? Is this cab worth that amount, etc.?

I currently own an an SVT and an 8x10 and enjoy the punch very much, but much of the low-end gets muddy and all that, so thought I'd check one of these out and see how I feel.

Also thought it'd be great to snag one of these, ya never really see em around.

Talk Bass can't really hold your hand about buying on CL. My business on Craig's List is separate from this Forum, as is Ebay or anywhere else.

The 8x10 sounds better.

I've never really noticed muddy low end on my SVT-CL/ 810E rig. I think that would have something to do with your eq settings. I wouldn't buy it. The 2-15 cab and 810E would be over kill IMO. Plus, I've never run my SVY head at 2 ohms.

Is your 810 an Ampeg 810? If it's an Ampeg then maybe something is wrong with your cab because I've never heard an 810E described as muddy.

I have, frequently. But one man's "mud" is another man's "tone". So the golden acronym "IMO" applies.

The 2x15 is a sweet cab though. Better have a truck or SUV to haul it around but it's my 2nd favorite large cab behind my Aguilar GS412. As for value...supporting membership is required or just do a search on ebay's completed auctions or the TB classifieds.

I scored an old 2x15 off CL for a Spector Legend Bolt-on. Best trade I ever made.

So the guy asks how much something is worth. Who cares. Let's not get the Talk Bass Police involved. Jeesh. And if your CL or Ebay business is separate from here, then don't respond.

Anyway..

I saw a 2x15 in my local Guitar Center a few years ago, and the manager of my practice space recently bought one. The one I saw at GC was around $350, and it was in mint condition. I'm pissed I didn't pick it up. It sounded amazing. And I'm not a 15 kind of guy. I'd say see if you can bargain with the guy. If not, you've still got the 8x10. All I can say is from the 2 I've heard, they're pretty nice. But I do agree, it's overkill.

And if your 8x10 is getting muddy, maybe cut your lows a little bit. I've never had an 8x10 sound muddy, unless the lows are CRANKED.

I've gotten the impression from other Ampeg threads on TB that the 2 x 15 cabs are hard to come by. If I had the means to haul something like a 2 x 15 around, I'd probably grab it. I think my V4BH would sound awesome through it, so I imagine an SVT would too. I'm not sure how great a price $ 500.00 is, though.

True, they are hard to come by. I told him I've seen mint ones for $350...

I gig out with SLM era Ampeg 2x15 cabs and I love them. However, if you think the 810 is muddy- you might not like the 2x15. The 810 rolls the low end off around 60hz, and the 2x15 IMO really is focused around 40-50hz. That doesn't mean that they can't work well as a full range cab, but it just might not be your cup of tea. I like to get a lot of big deep old school thump out of mine without a lot of midrange articulation. More "feel" than "loudness". I know that some of the 810's over the years vary in how they sound - some are dark and some have better definition- so it could just be that particular 810.

OVERKILL??

That seems a little pricey for a used 215, but I'd love to have it to go with my 810.

The only time "too much bass" goes together is when it follows "There's no such thing as-"

If he can manage the 810, surely the 2x15 is not an issue.....the real question is: can he manage both?????

Which 2x15? Vintage or modern? Considering you said mint condition, I'm going to assume modern and say you should try to talk them down on the price. An 8x10/2x15 setup would be huge, and definitely overkill in 99% of situations, but would look freaking awesome, and give you some tonal variability.

As far as the Ampeg 8X10 being muddy - it depends on the generation, speaker content, and listener's opinion. Considering how they tend to roll-off the lows, I wouldn't really call them muddy cabs unless you're EQing in a ton of low and no mids, but then again, different situations/gigs/EQ preferences/basses/players will produce hugely different results, so YMMV.
