The ampeg sound - cab, or amp?

Hi guys,
I was just wondering about this. It seems like every time I hear a band, I can instantly tell if their bassist is through ampeg. It just seems deeper, more powerful.. you can just tell! Now, my question is - would an ampeg 810 powered by a different amp still sound just as good? An ampeg head into an eden cabinet or something, would that be as deep? I very, very rarely see this pairing ever broken up.

I think most musicians prefer to use the same brand head and cabs. In the late 70's and early 80's I used nothing but early 1970's Ampeg. In the early 90's I switched to Hartke but quickly realized that I didn't like them. I went back to Ampeg but the sound wasn't the same as those early 70's heads and cabs that I had in the past. I have been using GK for the last several years and have been happy but it seems that every time I hear the exact bass tone that I want, the bass player is using Eden.
One of the reasons that you are hearing a deeper more powerful tone is that bassists who use Ampeg typically play a heavier style of music. Bassists who play pop, blues, jazz and country tend to use other brands such as Eden, EBS, Hartke, etc. There are some exceptions to this but for the most part, this has been my experience.

The answer to your question is that if you change the head or the cab you will get a different sound. Every manufacturer builds their gear differently. They use different suppliers, have different specs and use different speakers. The difference in sound may be subtle but there will be a difference. You can get probably get the same sound with a different set up if you spend time tweaking the eq.

That's a very good point, actually - and you're completely right. Every time I see an ampeg in use, it's loud, with two guitar stacks beside it, and a loud drummer - but man, Ampegs really shine in that environment!
