Ampeg Speaker Upgrade?

Sign in to disble this ad
I've got an Ampeg 610 HLF Classic Cab. American made, I've had it since it was new and it's been to hell and back with me. To the extent that a few of the speakers are now blown. After 9 years of really pushing this cab hard on a regular basis, I have no complaints about the blown speakers.

So, I'm in a position to either simply replace the speakers with similar Eminence cones, or take this opportunity to upgrade to 'better' speakers. I don't necessarily mean 'better' in terms of longevity, but more so in the realm of tone.

Does anyone have suggestions for 'better' speakers for my cab? I run a late 80's SVT Classic head through it, passive vintage P Bass, pretty straightforward classic tone. If this were a guitar rig, I would immediately think of Vintage 30's, Blue Alnicos, etc as obvious speaker upgrades. However, I don't know of any bass speakers that are as obvious/iconic/standard upgrades for Ampeg cabs. Maybe there aren't any.

Help?

Is it a sealed or ported cab? What was the problem with the tone you wanted to correct? Some people dislike the tone of the heavy drivers in newer sealed ampeg 8x10s and replaced with Jensen Mod 10s, different sound, and dunno if it would apply to a 6x10.

it wouldn't. the mods are light duty guitar speakers that coincidentally work in a sealed 810 as long as you don't slam them with a lot of power. the hlf cabs are ported and designed with bass specific speakers. and throwing just any old speaker in there can affect it in very negative ways, especially when port tunings are taken into consideration. best option is direct replacements or reconing, and since direct replacements are like $110 each, reconing is the way more attractive option.
