Ampeg SVR-212 Speaker Replacement

Sign in to disble this ad
So, I picked up this SVR212 cab ultra cheap, and I'd like to experiment with taking out the old, heavy, two hundred watt speakers and replacing them with some Eminence 3012 neos.

This ported cab has one front- and one rear-firing 12" speaker, and a front firing tweeter as well. According to the limited online info I can find on the cab, the 12s are wired out of phase and crossed over. Not sure of the crossover point. Someone mentioned a similarly designed (front/rear config.) Ampeg 2x15 that was crossed over around 150 Hz.

Anyway, I'm wondering if I should get two of the 3012HO speakers, or a 3012HO and 3012LF. My guess is the former. Anything else I should consider? I know people have used these speakers successfully in a variety of cabs. Anything I'd need to be concerned about other than making sure I get them wired up properly?

If it helps, the approximate exterior dimensions of the cab are H17.75", W20.5", D17.75". I don't know the exact port length, but it runs to within a couple of inches of the back of the interior, with a diameter of about 3".

Bump. I know there are some cab and speaker experts lurking around here with some informed opinions on this...

You need exact interior dimensions, and measurement of the port length/width/depth. Exclude the port and its structure from the interior volume. Only then can someone model different drivers in that cab.

There's a good chance the crossover won't be right with different speakers.

Also, don't expect to pump a lot more power into a pair of 12s in that cabinet.

weird, so its a dipole? Why would you want a bass cab like that? I guess so the drummer can hear?

I don't know what Ampeg's intent was with the design. I've read a few other owners who used it "so the drummer can hear," while others have said they like to place it about 8 inches from a wall. To get the sound that bounces back to them or something. I've only done the latter, and I will say it's a very loud cab when used in that way.

Zombie thread returns... did you end up trying those Eminence 3012's in that cab? How did they work out? I just bought a DD-12 cabinet (same as SVR 212 without the rack part on top) and was thinking of doing the same thing. Well, after I re-upholster it in green faux-dinosaur leather.

EDIT: The reason that the sub faces backwards is that low bass is omnidirectional. Try it, if you have a bi-amped system. Doesn't matter which way you point the sub.
