how can I tell from this serial number that year is?

Check the dates on the potentiometers.

you can't tell anything about the age of old ampeg amps by the serial number. you can guess by the design sort of when it was made within a few years, but you have to open it up and look at the volume and tone pots to pinpoint the date better.

really, all he has to do is look for a silver face plate with blue lettering.

You guys are awesome. I can't believe there isn't a website with SVT pictures showing the basic differences clearly!

I explained how to look for the codes on the pots. If anyone knows a site with pictures showing these pots and codes, please link.

The difference between 6550s and 6146bs in the power section of the early 70s SVTs that I've heard is subtle to my ears.
