AMPEG SVT 2-PRO - Graphic EQ Issue!?!

Sign in to disble this ad
I just bought an ampeg svt 2 pro used from someone on craigslist. First of all, Im completely done looking for amps/pedals. The tone cannot be put into words. I will keep this amp for life and pay whatever I have to(including physical therapy for the weight of this glorious beast) to keep it running. Just amazing.

Now to the problem... The graphic eq does not work! When you push the button for the eq nothing happens(I had the 3 pro and I know the little green light by the faders should come on when the graphic eq is engaged). It wasnt just the light, the sliders werent doing anything so I came to the conclusion the graphic eq doesnt work. I talked the guy down another $200 because of the issue. ALthough I didnt even plan on using the graphic eq that much, Id still like to have the option. Does anyone have any suggestions? Is it a cheap fix? Or should I just forget it because I can get orgasmic tones out of the amp anyway?

No telling for sure..... But it sounds like the switching voltage is messed up.

The switching is done by small JFET transistors, and there is a voltage that drives them all to do the switch. If the light does not change, the switching voltage is likely messed up, possibly because one of the JFETS is bad, or maybe just a broken solder joint.

I was wondering if some kind of defect in the EQ's foot-switch jack might be another possible culpret here. I'd at least try plugging a foot-switching pedal in to see if it made any difference.

35. FOOTSWITCH: This is a stereo jack which
will operate with a standard dual footswitch. The
tip of the plug controls the Mute operation, the
ring controls the Graphic EQ operation, while the
sleeve acts as a ground common to both. With
the footswitch inserted, both the front panel and
the footswitch Mute switches are active. The
front panel Graphic EQ switch (15) must be IN
for the Graphic EQ footswitch to operate.
